Rich History and Optimistic Future

This updated second edition is incredibly comprehensive coming in at 52 chapters and over 750 pages. This detail is meant to help overcome an observation the author makes in his preface, "the world has generally known little of Ukraine". Magosci then proceeds to overcome this knowledge deficit with a rich and detailed history.
Ukraine is Europe's second largest country and a land made of up many cultures and peoples - it is not exactly homogeneous in composition. Roughly the size of the Province of Manitoba in Canada, it also resembles that Province's topography being largely comprised of "vast plains and plateaus which seldom rise more than 1,600 feet."
Ukraine has been open to friendly and unfriendly people through the centuries as it lacks any natural geographic boundaries. Its very name means "Borderland" as it touches many European countries. Rich in natural resources, the country has been attractive to foreign interests for centuries. Currently, those identifying themselves as "Ukrainians" constitute 77.8% of the 48 million inhabitants of the country. Its history has seen it ruled for significant periods of time by Poland and Russia, as well as, contested by Sweden.
The most interesting and entertaining parts of the book include: the Cossacks who embody the best characteristics of Ukrainians in terms of freedom and independence; The Period of Ruin in the 17th Century; The Russian Revolution which gave a glimmer of nationalistic hope; Holodomor - the infamous famine; the Second World War which saw the country occupied by Romanian and German forces; resistance to Soviet rule; and independence.
The author leaves off on an optimistic note for Ukraine even though it has stumbled significantly politically. The country's east-west divide or spheres of influence still tug it back and forth. As a third generation Ukrainian-Canadian, I want to share that optimism but there must be a stronger and deeper track record of successful leadership in Ukraine. I send my appreciation to the author for compiling this tremendous history. Other reads on Ukraine I recommend are:

An encyclopaedic narrative

Paul Robert Magocsi delivers a comprehensive, detailed and engaging history of Ukraine, spanning primeval, mediaeval and modern periods. His book is monumental and encyclopaedic. It’s therefore long at 750 pages, but peppered with interesting summary panels on important subjects. It remains very readable and accessible throughout.
The story of Ukraine is fascinating, as the land and its people are tossed between and suppressed by competing invading powers, and only recently find their existential identity. I had one colleague who claimed that during his father’s lifetime, his house in Uzhhorod had been in 4 countries! The character list runs from Genghis Khan to Stalin and beyond ; the warring states include Sweden, Russia, Poland-Lithuania, Hungary, Austria, the reconstituted Poland, Romania, Czechoslovakia, Nazi Germany, and the Soviet Union! Magocsi supplies succinct histories of the origins of the two world wars which devastated Ukraine.
Magocsi’s treatment of church focusses on the established church and misses the rich history of non-conformity in Ukraine (very traditional Pentecostal churches meeting in remote hidden locations). The story of Berdychiv (synagogues connected by tunnels, Nazi holocaust, Balzac’s wedding) would also add illustrative detail.
Magocsi’s work is narrative chronicle history and as such offers a huge history database. Its publishing timescale prevents it including the most recent political events in Ukraine, Russia’s annexing of Crimea, and the war. He doesn’t offer analytics or explanatory hypothesis. We therefore gather immense factual data, but less understanding on which to base expectation and policy.

History of Ukraine and Sweeping Narrative of Eastern Europe

Ukraine has a unique history in that it is difficult to pinpoint when Ukraine emrged - from its Kieven Rus roots, under the rule of the Duchy of Lithuania and then the Commonwealth of Poland/Lithaunia and then split in half between Muscovy and Poland and all the while the Ottomans at their doorstep. But Magocsi does a great, non biased job of telling the story of Ukraine and the overlapping history of her neighbors and conquerors (Lithuania, Poland, Russia and others) up to the point of her independence. I love this book! Each chapter is about 10 pages or so long and not one page is wasted - each chaulk full of info and history leading up to the next chapter with an ominous warning or prediction of things to come. The book flows nicely and I could not put it down! Please add this book to your volumes of Eastern European History!
