THIS IS A BOOK FOR PEOPLE AT ALL LEVELS - LAYMAN, COMPOSER, OR ADVANCED MUSIC LOVER. "Why should one have to learn or need guidance on how to listen to what one is hearing?" is the question that William Schuman asks in his Preface. "The answer is simple. Listening to music is a skill that is acquired through experience and learning. Knowledge enhances enjoyment."
What makes What to Listen for in Music so invaluable is that it is the ONLY book on musical appreciation written by a GREAT COMPOSER. "This is a composer's book," Aaron Copland states. "Given the chance, every composer would like to know two very important things about anyone who takes himself seriously as a music lover...1. Are you hearing everything that is going on? [and] 2. Are you really being sensitive to it?"
The only shortcoming of this book is that it should be taken as part of a class to make sure that one gets everything out of it. It would be great if it came with a CD of all the examples to which Copland makes reference. However, each chapter does end with a list of "recommended listening." To make specific points, Copland does include sheet music (but I didn't read this book sitting next to my piano). However, these problems are minimal, considering we live in an age of the cheap CDs and music downloads.
Copland covers EVERY aspect of music, starting with "how we listen," - on the sensuous plane, the expressive plane, and the sheerly musical plane. He then goes on to explain to us the Four Elements of Music - Melody, Rhythm, Harmony, and Tone Color. We find out about all the musical instruments, their history and classifications. We find out about all the genres in music - Sectional Form, Variation Form, Fugal Form, Sonata Form, Free Form. Did you know that Sonata Form includes symphonies as well? And that symphonies grew out of operatic overtures?
This is a book that bears re-reading. A lot of technical jargon gets bandied about and, although Copland does his best to explain it all, it still gets a tad confusing. I advise reading this book, listening to a LOT of music, and then reading it again. I know my own knowledge and appreciation of music has grown from reading it. Now I DO have an idea of the nuances I should be listening for in a Mozart piano concerto.

A good introduction to classical music

Given the complexity of classical music, it is not surprising that many people find it confusing and intimidating. With all those terms like "sonata-allegro form" and "contrapuntal texture", it's easy to feel intimidated when trying to make sense of an hour long symphony. Fortunately, Aaron Copland does a good job explaining the basics of how music is structured.

This book covers music, specifically classical music, from several different angles. These include the sensual, expressive, and musical aspects, but also the way elements like rhythm, harmony, and melody interact to form music. Copland also covers musical texture from simple unaccompanied melodies to the complexities of counterpoint.

Copland also gives a basic overview of the history of classical music and how it evolved from unaccompanied religious chants to organum to counterpoint and accompanied melodies. He also mentions how composers do their work and his perspectives and experiences with composition.

On the negative side, the book is very dated, to say the least, refering to 30s era records and "the rhythm-based music of savage tribesmen". However, that shouldn't stop

Be it ever so humble, there's no penis like your own

I'm not certain a wilder fantasy can be had. An incubus/succubus, magical smegma, a set of detachable, interchangable penises of various sizes & functions, demons, & a woman scientist who doesn't know the meaning of the word "No" nor how a man values his own penis. This is Piers Anthony boldly rushing in where Mrs. Grundy fears to tread.
I enjoy his novels, and this one was no exception. I read it long before I had discovered Xanth, Tarot, or the Incarnations of Immortality. I don't think I had yet read the first Phaze trilogy. What an introduction! This book stood alone in it's own right--one doesn't have to be an Anthony fan to enjoy it.
I was attracted to the taboo-violating nature of the basic plot device: Evil scientist removes man's stubby little penis & gives him a wide range of accessories (with full sensate functioning) to replace it. Man goes on quest to obtain techno-magical item to exchange for his original organ. The theme of "a quest to obtain something magical so the wizard will return what is rightfully yours" is a tired old theme. Applying it to a man's =PENIS= returns it to novelty!
Once you get past the creative audacity, this reads like any other Anthony novel. The characters don't have a lot of depth (the hero seems to occupy a fractal dimension larger than two but fails to achieve a full three dimensions). Who cares? His creativity is legendary--and this book showcases it well. Lots of challenges, action & even the odd pun, all played out in a sci-fi-magico-phantasy-sexual arena.
Yes, there are some very interesting forms of coupling portrayed in this book. I would hesitate to label it erotica, and certainly =NOT= consider it pornography. It's not a one-handed read. Think of it more as a Xanth novel you'd hate to explain to a pre-pubescent! This is as violent as any quest novel, but the sexual arena for the quest makes the violence less palatable.
Three stars for characterization. Four stars for plot. Five stars for shear audacity. If you've got an open & adventurous mind, don't miss this unique book.

HOLY SMEGMA!

When I picked up my first Xanth book at 14 and learned about the adult conspiracy, little did I know what I was going to get myself into later. Pornucopia was a completely different beast than the punny Xanth series, whimsical Adept series, the more philosophical Incarnation series, or anything else by my favorite author.
Although the writing style had the same basic flavor as Anthony's other writing, Pornucopia had a distinct campy flavor to it, as if there was not put alot of effort into the book. On the other hand, the story was well connected to itself and the plot flowed very smoothly. As usual, the book was incredibly amusing and entertaining...but this one had the added plus of being ultimately naughty. The book showed us even more of Anthony's playful side.
Each section was well written and entertaining, and the characters all had a presence that was impossible to ignore. It was hard not to be enchanted with a succubus, demons, venereal disease-healing smegma, detatchable penises of a variety of forms, wanton sexual exploits and abundant ejaculations of creativity.
Highly recommendable!

Strangely Interesting Story

Pornucopia is a combination of fantasy and erotica. Piers Anthony only sells this book to persons over 21 years of age.
It is the story of a man who finds he holds a cure for venereal disease on his, um, genitalia (sp?). Because this is so important, his genitalia is/are removed and he is given a substitute. The rest of the book details his quest to get his genitalia back.
The premise of this book is so outlandish and ludicrous that it is enjoyable to read. I did a lot of laughing and eye-brow raising. However, it is not for the conservative or faint of heart.
If you are an adult and a diehard Piers Anthony fan, I would recommend this book. Especially if you are open-minded. Otherwise, you probably won't enjoy the story. It's pretty darn wierd. I'd have to say that I've never read anything quite like it.

Small in size; big on ideas

Denis Noble describes his short book, "The Music of Life: Biology Beyond Genes", as a polemic. It is, in fact, a clarion call for a rethink to the reductionist dogmas that currently plague--and hinder--so much scientific thinking, particularly in the field of biology and, most especially, genetics. Professor Noble is not, of course, alone in making this call (see, for instance, Stuart Kaufmann's "Reinventing the Sacred" or "Evolution in Four Dimensions" by Eva Jablonka and Marion J. Lamb) but he presents a particularly clear-sighted argument which few others have so far matched. His is a far-reaching and eminently readable disquisition, attacking first the popular metaphor articulated primarily by Richard Dawkins in "The Selfish Gene" (and promulgated endlessly--usually incorrectly--by science popularists ever since) that genes are the engines of evolution and each genome a comprehensive "program of life". Throughout his book, Noble turns that view around with a different and far more accurate metaphor, presenting the genome as a database from which the organism can select in order to call upon an elegant modularity of gene expression in a bewildering display of inventiveness of response to environmental and physiological conditions.

Along the way, the author uses a series of music-related analogies to extend his metaphor and piece together the various fragments of his argument into a coherent look at the biology of the organism as a fully functioning system, operating on and at many levels. He shows that far from the established view where the arrows of explanation all point downwards to the lower, ever more fundamental elements of cellular physiology (ending up ultimately at DNA as the primary explanatory element) there exists in reality a complex system of feedback pathways which enable the organism to act upon its own genetic material, altering the way that each gene is expressed in combination with others as a consequence of their whereabouts within the organism, or the conditions to which the organism may be subjected. Within this systems view of biological functioning, the complex pathways of interaction become the primary explanatory elements, rather than any of the physical components themselves.

This single insight provides several additional mechanisms for the operation of evolution through natural selection over and above the simplistic one of random gene mutation which is held in such high regard by today's neo-Darwinists, and reopens the door to the long-ridiculed notion of so-called Lamarckian inheritance of acquired characteristics. It also calls into question the wisdom of, for instance, neurologists seeking the physical location of "the self" within the prescient organism; within Noble's view of things, such concepts as "the self" cease to have any likelihood of an actual physical presence (as separate, identifiable entities within the organism) but instead become emergent functional properties of a level of operation of the biological system itself.

It should be clear by now that this book presents serious challenges to a great deal of current biological dogma and there will be many readers for whom this book is an eye-opener. It is an easy and entertaining read for anyone with even a smattering of science and regardless of whether or not you finally come to agree with Denis Noble, you can be sure you'll find what he has to say interesting and enlightening.

Finally someone with knowledge and common (scientific) sense!

Dr. Noble is one of the most creative physiologists of our time, and not surprisingly he decided to put an end to the endless "DNA craze" affecting scientists and media alike. In an era where everything is "genetic", Dr. Noble lucidly unmasks the pitfalls of gene-centrism, to reveal the powerful and obvious societal and organismal influences that govern gene expression. This little book does not deny the work by Dawkins and Gould (frequently and appropriately cited) but rather redefines the modern Darwinism of life in a more holistic, and scientifically acceptable perspective. The devil is in the details, and we have been fooled for too long by those who only see the music notation of life and not the whole symphony!
