David Sawyer McFarland is president of Sawyer McFarland Media, Inc., a Web development and training company in Portland, Oregon. He's been building websites since 1995, when he designed an online magazine for communication professionals. He's served as webmaster at the University of California at Berkeley and the Berkeley Multimedia Research Center, and oversaw a complete CSS-driven redesign of Macworld.com. David is also a writer and trainer, and teaches in the Portland State University multimedia program. He wrote the bestselling Missing Manual titles on Adobe Dreamweaver, CSS, and JavaScript.

Solid book with all the content you need

A Missing Manual aims to be "the book that should have been in the box." Well, if Adobe had included this work by McFarland, that box would have been big and heavy indeed! This thing is over 1000 pages and includes just about everything a serious beginner would need to advance quickly with both the Dreamweaver tool and with modern Web page construction. The author explains early on that he even deliberately left out certain features of Dreamweaver that have suffered from lack of attention by Adobe and no longer conform to modern page and site construction practices. "It's not in your interest to learn how to use [these features] nor in our interest to lead you toward a tool that's no good."

I like that attitude and it is a clue that these 1000 pages contain solid material with no waste in time for you.

The book is logically organized, like a class that teaches Web site construction with the best tool around. You advance chapter by chapter across the basics, learning both the tool interface and the coding practices. I recommend you follow along in the book -- but, just in case, this book has a companion Web site with most of the example pages ready to use.

The other thing I like about the book is, once past the mechanics, the book goes into the more interesting issues, like the Spry drop-ins, design issues, layout flexibility, site management and the ever-challenging cascading style sheets. On the other hand, so far I have not encountered any handling of the cooler features of HTML 5 or CSS 3 -- but that is not the purpose of this book.

This book should be all you need to get comfortable with both Dreamweaver and the range of coding conveniences it offers.

It's like a course

If you don't know where to begin when you open Dreamweaver the first time, i recommend you this book. Dreamweaver doesn't come with a manual anymore, so this book helps. A nice thing about this book is that it doesn't cover some features that are not in use anymore but Dreamweaver still has. So it's focus in on active and useful features.

Practical Guide to Building a Website from Scratch

Building a website is a daunting task, but this book takes you from the basics up to the powerful advanced features of Dreamweaver CS6. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand the intricacies of web-building to create their own website from scratch. I was a complete novice but now I have enough working knowledge to finish my first website. This book is thorough and written in a very comprehensible manner. There's a tutorial where you build a website for a fictitious Caf� and learn how to use Dreamweaver's built-in tools. At first sight, it's a little overwhelming (nearly 1,000 pages of hefty reading) but it's easy to digest if you're motivated to build a website from scratch. I had one issue with this manual. Since I was a true "beginner" in web design, I did not know any of the codes used by webmasters and I couldn't find a "listing" of the codes in the Index. The codes are, however, scattered throughout the book. Also, since I was not familiar with "web-related" terminology, I had trouble finding answers to certain problems encountered on my website. Overall, I believe this truly is the Manual that should have been included in Adobe's Dreamweaver CS6.

About the Author
"Born in Malda, West Bengal (India), Subir Kumar Saha completed most of his school studies from Vidyasagar Vidyapith, Midnapore (also in West Bengal). He obtained a BE (Mech.) from RE College (now NIT), Durgapur in 1983, followed by a Master’s from IIT Kharagpur in 1985. He then obtained a PhD degree from McGill University, Canada, in 1991, and immediately joined the R&D Center of Toshiba Corporation in Japan. At Toshiba, he worked on space robot dynamics. In 1995, he returned to IIT Madras as a Visiting Faculty, before joining IIT Delhi in 1996 as an Assistant Professor. Since 2006 he is a Professor at IIT Delhi, and presently he holds the Naren Gupta Chair Professorship at IIT Delhi. Prof. Saha is in the Dean’s Honors’ List of McGill University for his Excellent PhD thesis, and received the Humboldt Fellowship during 1999-2000 when he was at the University of Stuttgart, Germany. He has also been a visiting faculty/researcher to several universities abroad, for example, McGill University, Canada, Monash University, Australia, University of Verona, Italy, and Waseda-IPS, Japan. Prof. Saha is actively engaged in teaching, research, and technology development. His present book’s (Introduction to Robotics) first edition was widely acclaimed by readers in India and abroad. The RoboAnalyzer software (http://www.roboanalyzer.com) that complements the book was also well received and is very popular. He established the SAE-IIT Delhi Chapter in 1997, Robotics Club in 2002, Mechatronics Laboratory in July 2001, and contributed significantly in setting up the Programme for Autonomous Robotics (PAR) Laboratory in May 2010. His research, consultancy, and training activities with many private companies like Asahi India, Sona Steering, Minda-Huf, SAMTEL Colour Tubes, and public sectors like BHEL, CEPC, and government agencies like DST, MIT, CWDB, Simulator Development Division, BARC/BRNS are clear indicators of the industries’ confidence in Prof. Saha’s commitment. Prof. Saha has more than 185 research publications in reputed journals and conference proceedings, and has delivered more than 160 invited lectures."
