Challenging, disturbing, revelatory and genuinely original, Smail's work has had too little influence to date in the world of academic and professional psychology. Perhaps this is because it is 20, maybe 50, years ahead of its time and doesn't satify our contemporary demand for 'serious' (that is tunnel-visioned, involuted and introverted) psychology. There's a surging current of analysis here that should be read by all students of psychology. And it is beautifully written. It represents a rare thing amongst the dross that is churned out to satisfy the appetite of the Research Assessment Exercise - a book worth buying. Prof Gary Thomas, University of Birmingham, UK. David Smail was a consultant clinical psychologist in the NHS and Special Professor in Clinical Psychology at the University of Nottingham.

a sociologized and politicized psychology - excellent

Clinical psychology employs an individualist cosmology, and sees the relief of distress, and by implication the cause of distress, to be internal to the individual. Yet we know that in times of economic distress, when people's jobs and material security are threatened, rates of depression, suicide, domestic violence, among others, rise significantly. This book explores the influence of external factors, major among them being the dynamics of a capitalist economy, on internal or psychological stability. This book is very good at spelling out this issue.

About the Author
Lyle C. Brown, Ph.D., University of Texas at Austin, is Professor Emeritus at Baylor University. Other academic experience includes teaching at Mexico City College (now University of the Americas), Texas College of Arts & Industries (now Texas A&M University-Kingsville), and Wayland Baptist College (now Wayland Baptist University). Lyle served as president of the Southwest Council of Latin American Studies. He is co-editor of RELIGION IN LATIN AMERICAN LIFE AND LITERATURE and author or co-author of articles in professional journals, anthologies, and textbooks. His involvement in Texas politics includes participation in precinct, county, and state conventions.

Joyce Langenegger teaches government at Blinn College-Bryan and is the Director of Professional Development. She received her M.A. and J.D. from Baylor University and an M.A. and Ph.D. from Fielding Graduate University. She was named the Blinn College-Bryan Academic Faculty Member of the Year for 2014. She has been named to WHO'S WHO AMONG AMERICA'S TEACHERS three times and received a NISOD Award for Teaching Excellence and a "Most Valuable Player" award from San Jacinto College for her work there as a professor and an administrator. Joyce is a frequent workshop presenter on innovative teaching strategies. She practiced law for a number of years and has been involved with politics at the local and state level.

Sonia Garcia, Ph.D., University of California, Santa Barbara, is Chair of the Political Science Department at St. Mary's University. She has published articles on Latina politics and is a co-author of MEXICAN AMERICANS & THE LAW: EL PUEBLO UNIDO JAM�S SER� VENCIDO (2004). Sonia also is the lead author of POLITICAS: LATINA PUBLIC OFFICIALS IN TEXAS (2007), which examines the first Mexican-American women elected to public office in Texas from various levels of offices.

Ted Lewis, Ph.D., University of Texas at Austin, is Vice President of Academic Affairs at Pellissippi State Community College. He has taught government and political science at the college level for nearly 30 years. He was previously dean of instruction at Loan Star College-Cyfair and Professor, Chair of the Political Science Department, and Director of the Learning Communities Program at Collin County Community College. Dr. Lewis has conducted workshops on Texas election procedure for the Texas Secretary of State and has served as a county party chairperson, on state political party executive committees, and on several statewide candidate campaign advisory committees. He has delivered numerous national presentations and has published articles in such journals as the Community College Journal of Research and Practice, the Journal of the League for Innovation in the Community College, and the National Social Science Journal. He is listed in both WHO'S WHO IN AMERICAN POLITICS and WHO'S WHO AMONG AMERICA'S TEACHERS.

Robert E. Biles, Ph.D., Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies, is Professor and former Chair of Political Science at Sam Houston State University. He has published several books and numerous scholarly articles. Bob has served as a professional staff member for the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, a member of the local school board, county political party chair, county election supervisor, state board member of a citizen's lobbying group, a member of advisory committees to the Texas Commissioner of Higher Education and the Texas State Board for Educator Certification, and secretary and president of the Women's Caucus of the Southwestern Social Science Association. He has received four Fulbright grants to teach and do research in Latin America. He received his university's top award for research, his college's award for teaching, and the first university Faculty Senate award for administration.

What you'd expect for a rental

It's pretty much what you'd expect for a rental I got it with obvious water damage so there's that, but over all it's fine and cheaper than getting it from the bookstore

Good book on Texas Government easy to read in Kindle app!

I rented the Kindle version of this book for a summer course of Texas government. One good thing is that by renting the book I only payed a fraction of the price of the new book which is extremely expensive for a student and was unreasonable for me to pay. I only had to download the kindle app in my mac so that I could read it. The kindle app allows for highlighting, adding notes and also has a finder if you need to look for key concepts. The only problem for me was that the minimum rental time was 3-4 months and I honestly only needed the book for 1 month, so I think there should be cheaper short term options. Overall, I am pleased with this product and would recommend it. I did not receive any discount or compensation for my review of this product. My reviews are critical and unbiased and will always reflect my honest opinion of the product. I write my reviews with the only purpose of informing potential buyers and help them make an informed decision.

Don't promise me an access code if I'm not going to get one. Talked to customer service so many times and they sent me to Cengage customer service who then sent me back to Amazon. Thank you so much for making my life incredibly difficult! This course is super rushed, so I'm already behind on assignments.

Interesting And Thought Provoking

I found this book both interesting and thought provoking. I've been trying to escape from my job for a few years now but had not guide to go by until this one.

One of my brothers is more of a free spirit when it comes to work and though I haven't always admired it, I've certainly noticed it. I, on the other hand, have always been tied to a certain kind of job which gave me what I would call security, when it reality it wasn't. My brother has always found a way to get by on what he has, be it making money, friendships, etc, and after trying to escape the job trap I've been in all of my adult life, his way of getting by is now very admirable to me. In fact, I'd say that he would closely epitomize the ideas found in The Joy Of Not Working.

There were, I thought, a couple of places in the book which appeared contradictory to what the author espoused say in a previous section of the book. Though, I don't particularly ding him on this. The book book is quite long and some of the ideas bleed over from other chapters, but all in all there are some good concepts and things I would never have thought of.

He does talk about the work ethic of people today, in that they work too long, work too hard and for too little pay and for the most part I would agree that we do that as a society. However, if there is something you are truly passionate about I would take that part with a grain of salt. The way I see it is if you find something that you truly love to do and can get paid for doing it, then you are successful. I would not consider myself very successful in this area of my life. I've worked at a job where I was really well paid, was qualified to do, but realized that if they would have given me million dollars to stay I still would have left. Money is certainly not everything.

Would I suggest you read this book? If you've ever thought of leaving the proverbial rat race, then this book is a good source of information for you.

Workaholics should read

This book is to encourage people to find passion outside of work and be okay with not working but doing something they enjoy. I'm loving the book. I have recommended it to many people -from workaholics to retired individuals. I purchased it because I'm out of a job to take care of my family in a transition period. I've always been a hard worker and very independent. Relying on my husband (of only 6 months) has been hard...especially without friends and any recognition for a job well done. I needed to learn how to cope. This book has given me a new perspective.

Worth the money and read. I read it and passed it on to future retirees.

If you're looking to retire in the next 6 months or year or so, this is worth the read if you don't have any real plans for yourself when you retire. It gives some good insight to the way you need think about things and look at what you'll do with your free time. Even though my employer gives retirement seminars when you are at a year to retire, this is worth buying to add to it. You'll be surprised.
I read mine, and gave it to a friend to read as he is retiring soon. He promised to pass it on.
I'm glad I read it, as I've already followed some of the suggestions and they are worthwhile.

The Wonderful Mr. Pile

History of Interior Design is great. I study interior design and, without John Pile's books, this wide-ranging subject would have been far more difficult. Studying the subject "history of interior design" would have been such a struggle for me without having this book at my side. I just couldn't find all I needed on the internet. Apart from the high quality paper and excellent images, John Pile has a writing style that gets his point across very clearly. That makes for rapid reading and faster absorption of information.

amazing resource!

WOW! beautifully organized and articulated. thoughtful and well-rounded discussion of the variation and evolution of interior design. it was purchased to use as a course resource (on 20th century American consumer culture), but am now tempted to buy my OWN copy.

Great Read!

I couldn't wait to read this book after reading Bewitching Kisses. I fell in love with Chris in the first book so I was anxious to see what happened to him. The book was everything I was hoping for...romantic, intense, and a wonderful "happily ever after" ending! Can't wait for Rainy's next book!

Silver Flames

Great story. The author really pulled me into this book and kept my interest with numerous twists and unusual happenings. There were subjects normally not discussed in this genre and I thought it was well written, overall.
I enjoyed the setting in Williamsburg VA, as well.

Romanticism at it's best

Interesting and informative foray into the past. Romantic without being pornographic. Difficult to put down for even a short break. Yes, I recommend and will look for others by Ms. Kirland!
