About the Author
Verna Aardema (1911-2000) was a highly acclaimed storyteller and the author of many books of African folktales. Her book, Who’s in Rabbit’s House?, illustrated by Leo and Diane Dillon, was an ALA Notable Children’s Book and a School Library Journal Best Book of the Year, 1977. Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People’s Ears, also illustrated by the Dillons, was awarded the Caldecott Medal in 1976 and was chosen as an ALA Notable Children’s Book, as was a third Aardema-Dillon collaboration, Behind the Back of the Mountain.

Wide-Eyed Suspense

I really love the book "Bringing The Rain to Kapiti Plain," by Verna Aardema. I have enjoyed it so much that I am planning to give it as a gift to my sister who has two young children, ages 4 and 7. This is a simple story about a cattle herdsman and his wish for rain on the African plain. The narrative structure of the story is based on a sequence of events that builds suspense and interest in children until the end of the story. This is a memorable story; it is very simple to understand and has a powerful musical quality that, as a young adult, I enjoy reading aloud. The rhymes and rhythms are so strong that all young children will be wide eyed with suspense and interest until the very end of the story. I particularly enjoyed one line where the author rhymes "fat" and "Ki-pat": "So the grass grew green/ And the cattle fat!/ And Ki-pat got a wife/ And a little Ki-pat-." This story is suitable for young children because its tone is happy. It deals with the relationship of humans with water, plants and animals. Scientifically, it is unconceivable, but 4- to 8-year-old children do not have to understand the facts of science. From this book, however, they will learn about the connection between humans and nature by enjoying the colored pictures. The pictures are so vibrant that it is easy to imagine the world of Ki-pat. As an adult, I enjoy this book because it describes the cycle of life in a very interesting way. Readers of all ages will see that human life is totally dependent upon nature, and the existence of human beings without nature is nearly impossible. Readers will also learn how the lives of humans and animals are dependent on rain; people and animals need each other and every part of nature for their perfect existence. I highly recommend Verna Aardema's "Bringing the Rain to Kapiti Plain" to anyone who has young children and is looking for a book that illustrates the relationship between nature and human beings. The colorful, detailed pictures will keep the children interested while they are learning about the connection between nature and human beings.

A soothing tale that builds with each verse

The PBS show "Reading Rainbow" featured this book; James Earl Jones read it; I fell in love with it and have been giving it as a gift to friends ever since. The gentle story unfolds line by line, with a tender rhythm that entrances: "These are the cows, all hungry and dry, Who mooed for the rain to fall from the sky..." Ultimately Ki-pat, who's watching his herd, brings rain to Kapiti Plain by launching an arrow into the sky. But the charm is in the telling. My 11-year-old still obliges me and lets me read it to him every once in a while.

Incredible Response!

I bought this book after having it recommended while taking a graduate level children's literature class. I was not disappointed! I grabbed this book to read aloud if I had extra time while substitute teaching for a kindergarten class. I thought the children would be more attracted to the rhyme and pattern of the words so imagine my surprise when the book sparked a lengthy discussion between 5 year olds about drought, Africa, animals, and culture! It prompted questions that I didn't even know they were capable of asking and had them making connections to weather in our own backyard and stories they heard on the news. This book is a reading, social studies, and science lesson in one!

I like this handy book. This is a United Kingdom version of another great Australian text published a few years ago (Lennox N, Diggens J, eds. Management guidelines: People with developmental and intellectual disabilities. Melbourne: Therapeutic Guidelines Limited, 1999, 281 pages) on the initiative of professor Nicholas Lennox from Brisbane to give basic and important information to the primary care physician and health care worker about the population of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and their specific health problems.
Intellectual disability is now a more internationally accepted term used to describe deficits in cognitive and adaptive functioning. The term cognitive-adaptive disability is also used by some authors in this context. The evolution of the terminology from idiocy to mental retardation to intellectual disability is a reflection of a better understanding of the concept of cognition and cognitive deficits within the scientific and sociocultural contexts. Although intellectual disability is initially identified in infancy and early childhood years, it has life long implications for growth and development, education, ability to live independently, health care, find employment, and need for community based supports. In addition to medical evaluation and management, the physician plays a vital role in facilitating and coordinating the overall long term management for individuals who have intellectual disability.
In this book Peter Lindsay, a general practitioner from Thakur Practice in Leeds, has gathered a group of people at the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) to adapt and expand the original Australian publication to conditions and system in the United Kingdom and conform to the guidelines of the RCGP.
It is divided into three sections: Overview of intellectual disability care, routine care and specific disorders associated with intellectual disability with a total of 35 chapters.
It is a down to earth publication that describes the medical care of adults with IDD that the health care worker meets in general practive and primary care that reflects the RCGP curriculum. This book is handy and easy to read and understand for all health care workers and even families in contact with people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. A great job well done.

About the Author
Jon B. Hagen was awarded his Ph.D. from Cornell University in 1972, where he went on to gain 30 years' experience as an electronic design engineer, as well as establishing and teaching a Cornell electrical engineering course on RF electronics. Now retired, he has held positions as Principal Engineer at Raytheon, Electronics Department Head at the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico, and Director of the NAIC Support Laboratory at Cornell.

Very Intuitive

I am finding this book to be highly readable and enjoyable. It is a book that emphasizes on intuitive concepts. Just the chapter on oscillators alone is worth the price of the book. In my opinion intuitive understanding ranks way higher than dozens and dozens of equations and thus I am giving this book 5 stars.

DO NOT BUY THE KINDLE EDITION

If you're interested in this book, AVOID THE KINDLE EDITION and spring for a paper copy. The equations are rendered in a virtually illegible font. In more than 5 instances in the first chapter alone, plus signs (i.e., addition) are randomly substituted with forward slashes (i.e., division). If I weren't familiar with the formulae in question, I would've been hopelessly confused. Reading this book in electronic format is therefore next to useless. It's disappointing that no one at Cambridge University Press or Amazon thought to proofread the electronic format for accuracy and readability prior to putting it up for sale.

Not for Orthopaedists....

This book from Walter Greene is a text which goes throught basic information highlighting many important orthopaedic conditions. Good book for students, primary care doctors, or those in ancillary staff. Very few illustrations provided, and less detail than expected. No approaches provided. Beware, more of a general ortho text than an anatomy reference.

The leader: "atlas quality reference" is a little misleading.

I read this books and I think it is ok for beginers, its a way to think orthopaedically....for young fellows just as an pre view of the orthopaedics.
Today, may 31st 2010 I can say some other things abour this book: I bought and read this book because I had a traveling time so I use to read in the afternoon and believe me I found a lot of data I never saw in textbooks, there are many tips for the expertice clinician, I found this book as enjoyable as I found Salter's classical book 30 years ago. Of course a resident need to read and study textbooks as Campbell, Chapman, Thatchjain, and many books during the training hospital years, but a book like this will give any one a very nice afternoons and ...so many tips I did not remmember I read before.
