Mathematics is the language of economics, and this book is an excellent introduction to that language.

While there are many mathematics texts for economics available, this one is by far the best. It covers a comprehensive range of techniques with interesting applications, and the numerous worked examples and problems are a real bonus for the instructor. Teaching a course with this book is enjoyable and easy.

This is the second book in the Robots Go Wild! Series. Once again we meet up with Sammy and E. In t House of Robots E goes wild. Maddie is sick and cannot attend school. E goes in her place. There is a football game between 5 robots and a bunch of other robots. When a new robot shows up at school for a kid that has to stay home everything goes wrong for E, Sammy and the whole family. E is banned from school, Sammy’s mom may be out of a job, his dad’s novel may be canceled and Sammy must find a way to save the day.

I love this series and think this one is better than book 1. Juliana Neutfeld is a fantastic illustrator and Jack Patterson does a great job with the narration. I shared this book with my grandson and he loved it. He has listened to it three times now.

From my almost seven year-old, Joshua..... Great story

This story is about Sammy and his Robots. The main Robots name is "E", which stands for Egg-head. E goes berserk! Maddie suffers from bad germs and she has to stay at home. E is her substitute student. There is a robot football game at school and there's five robots verses a lot of robots. On the other team, one of the robots names was SS10K, and he helps them score 70 goals. When E arrives to play on his team his scores, about 50 goals, and his team wins.

The people who would like to read this book would be kids that want to be engineers. Joshua learnt not to make a robot that could go berserk - always check first!

About the Author
Scott Bellini is the Director of the Social Skills Research Clinic (SSRC), a university based center specializing in developing and empirically examining the outcomes of social skill interventions for youth with ASD. He is also a faculty member in the School Psychology program at Indiana University, Bloomington, a licensed psychologist in the state of Indiana, and an endorsed Health Services Provider in Psychology. He is currently conducting research on professional development outcomes for educators, anxiety disorders, and social skill interventions, including video modeling for youth on the autism spectrum. Dr. Bellini has published numerous research manuscripts and have provided consultation and training to families and professionals in over 35 states on the topic of social skills programming for students with ASD. He is the the author of the book, Building Social Relationships, which was named the Literary Work of the Year by the Autism Society of America, and Building Social Relationships 2, which was released in March of 2016. He currently lives in Bloomington, IN with his wife, Kelly and sons, Zachary, Addison, and Easton.

I'm an SLP working with children on the autism spectrum. This book is very helpful in focusing on goals needed for building social relationships. It helps me organize what the kids need into a hierarchy and gives practical ideas for working on the skills.

An excellent book for teachers, school psychologists, and parents

As a professor of educational psychology, I have looked for a way of showing my students (at Central Michigan University) how to work with children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. As the rate of those identified climbs, it is an almost certainty that general education teachers will have several students in their classes with ASD, and this book is a practical way of giving them the tools they need to understand a very effective method of working with those children to acquire the tools to interact with more typical students and in the social situations of everyday life. This book is written clearly, in an authoratative but user-friendly voice, and a plethora of resources are available not only to special ed. teachers, but to all stakeholders. Dr. Bellini has done the education community a major service, and this book is a terrific tool to bring understanding to what can be a challenging situation. I cannot recommend this book more highly.

This book is very helpful and positive. I really like books that are positive, and that tell you about solutions to problems.

As someone with Asperger's Syndrome myself, I know that if there had been books like this 30 years ago, I would have learned much earlier in life what things are appropriate to do and say in what situation. It's too bad that there were no books like this until very recent years!

Two streams of thought are unified at last!

Mark Levi's book "The Mathematical Mechanic" is a wonderful attempt to integrate physical reasoning with mathematical reasoning. These two strands have historically run in parallel and only occasionally have they been united at least at a pedagogical level. There seems to be a trend among Russian mathematicians particularly in the area of differential equations whereby they use physical reasoning to illuminate the more abstract mathematical approaches that are taken. V I Arnold is an example someone who has been known to integrate the two approaches. Perhaps Levi's Russian roots explain some of the impetus for this book. As mathematics becomes more and more specialised I fear that fewer mathematicians have the time or even inclination to think about the interconnections between physical reasoning and their own area. Levi's book is an antidote to that trend and he is to be congratulated for his efforts.

What Levy does is to take a large number of mathematical problems/theorems and show how physical reasoning using concepts such as conservation of energy, torque, resolution of forces, etc can be used to solve what are quite fundamental problems/theorems. In Chapter 2 he uses essentially torque concepts to prove the Pythagorean theorem be a thought experiment involving a right angled prism sitting in a water filled fish tank but attached to a spindle so it can rotate. The fact that it doesn't (ie there is zero net torque) leads directly to Pythagoras' Theorem.

Many of the problems turn upon one very basic physical principle and some careful reasoning about how that physical principle applies. For instance in working out why a triangle balances on the point of intersection of the medians the basic idea is a reductionist one and that is to conceptually slice a strip of the triangle. Since this strip balances and all the ones parallel to it will balance one can replicate the same argument for any other side and the point of balance will lie on the intersection of the medians. Levy spends a bit of time on geometrical optics and Fermat's principle and Snell's Law and gives a number of physical proofs for various formulas. There is that old favourite of saving a drowning victim by using Fermat's principle and this is explained in terms of Snell's law.

An interesting application of the general approach is to prove that the arithmetic mean is greater than the geometric mean by for throwing a switch. This all turns upon the concept of resistance along parallel paths and the result follows very quickly. Levy generalizes that approach to more complex arrangements. He covers Pappus Volume Theorem and applications of Ceva's Theorem. He also shows how you can compute the integral of sin x by using concepts of potential energy in the context of the movement of the pendulum. He touches on Hamiltonian mechanics and the Euler Lagrange equations and he even provides a hand waving proof of area preservation.

On page 125 there is a table of analogies between mechanics and analysis. For instance zero net work done is interpreted in an analytical sense in terms of preservation of the area. There is an interesting discussion of how an area preservation property can be viewed as a classical mechanical analog of the uncertainty principle in quantum mechanics. If an area preserving map squeezes some region about a point x we gain information about that point however because the map is area preserving it must stretch in the other direction (y) and this means that the range of values in the other direction is large so we lose information in that direction. If we think of the first variable x as signifying position and the second one being y which is identified with momentum, we then have the connection with the uncertainty principle.

I'm not aware of any other books that have systematically brought together this type of physical reasoning and its application to mathematical problems. In bringing together such a wide range of problems Levi has at the very least provided interested people with something to go on with in a more systematic fashion. The beauty of the book is that often a compelling physical reason for a particular mathematical equation can be much easier to remember and can actually illuminate the mathematical proof. One could even contemplate a little subculture of mathematics developing whereby people try to develop more and more inspired physical analogies for various mathematical theorems.

Levy does not assume a great level of mathematical sophistication however readers should have a reasonable grasp of basic concepts such as the resolution of forces, potential energy, kinetic energy and how the can be applied to a problem. There is no heavy-duty calculus or analysis involved and Levy has a very informal and chatty style.

I recommend this book without any reservation - it should have been written many years ago. I think students will find it enriches their understanding of the concepts.

What if Pythagoras had met Newton?

I loved geometry, thought it was the greatest thing since forever. The way I proved theorems was to visualize the constructs in motion. It made the stuff come alive for me, and I saw relationships that, well, others didn't seem to appreciate.

Levi does this over and over again, but instead of merely making moving parts, he assigns the physical to what is otherwise purely mathematical. In addition to the stroll down the memory lane of my thought processes--and a reassurance that at least one other person the universe does this as well--it showed a few new ways of looking at commonplace things--like Pythagoras' theorem. He proves it using torques--torques?????--yeah, torques. Yet another proof involves concentric circles. Just read it--it's clever as anything. I grant you that I had to look at most of the analogies a couple times to get them, but get them I did.

It's a great way to spend a few hours. My bet is that this will be most useful to math and physics teachers. Is everything about physics and math intuitive? Certainly not, but enough is that having a strong sense of it is useful. It took my intuition to the next level.

Very Original and Thought-Provoking

In this unusual book, the author discusses mathematical formulas and theorems using purely physical arguments, thus eliminating the usual detailed mathematical approaches. Some of the mathematical subject areas that are discussed include geometry, conics, integration and complex variables. Some of the physical disciplines that are used are mechanics, electricity, fluid dynamics and statics and optics. I found the level of difficulty to vary throughout the book; much of the material is clear, simple and really quite fascinating, while some of it is rather complex, significantly more challenging and often quite difficult to follow, i.e., real head-scratchers. What didn't help in the latter category were the several editorial mistakes which became rather annoying in the long run. The writing style is friendly, authoritative and generally clear but undoubtedly assumes a certain level of mathematical sophistication on the part of the reader. In my view, this is a book better suited for careful study at one's own pace rather than be leisurely read as one would a popular science/math book or a novel. Consequently, serious math/science buffs could certainly enjoy perusing this book and learn a great deal from it; however, it could also be used by math/physics students as a supplementary reference in an advanced math or physics course (as suggested by the author).

As a final note, I disagree with the author's statement that this book "should appeal to ... many people who are not interested in mathematics because they find it dry or boring". Although I understand (and agree with) the author's implication that mathematics is very far from being dry and boring, I would expect that most of the people he refers to would have avoided mathematics in their lives and would thus be unwilling to read this book in the first place, or be unable to follow most of the discussions presented if they did try to read it.

Excellent!!

Quade Danas, a jackal shifter, was banished from his pack for being gay. He went into the military where he excelled, gaining skills that will serve him well as a bodyguard to the teenage son, Roman Howell, whose father is a very rich man. When Roman is injured and left disfigured, only Quade seems to be able to reach him. Years have passed and Quade is still with Roman but Roman wants something more from Quade. He wants to be his mate. And no matter what Quade says, it is a possibility.

Word reaches Quade through his sister that his old pack is endangered by their new alpha, who is also a psychopath. His old loyalties are aroused and he knows he must help. But what will happen to his new love for Roman? The two must find a way to make it work. Quade should have no worries. Roman will make sure it does.

Quade was your big tough alpha hero and yet Roman knew just how to get what he wanted, often Quade’s dismay. The fight at the pack served to bring these two even closer. Together, Quade and Roman were so very hot but also so much fun (when not in danger). I had read the second book set in this world and just had to read the first one. Each one was unique except that they each feature hot heroes, danger and lots of action. I recently found Mary Calmes through a different story of hers and now I am hunting out all her stories. I love them and so will you if this is your genre.

Mine! Mine! Mine!

I never read the blurb. Mary Calmes on pre-order is enough to trigger a purchase. As I opened and began reading, it was like the bestest surprise evah!!! Shifters! *happy dance* It goes without saying that I devoured this in one sitting. Even if said sitting lasted until 3 am. (tsk-tsk - Imma tired Mama today)

I love Quade, alpha to the max - strong, sexy and grabby handed! *swoon* I adore Roman, wounded but far from wimpy. *sigh* Yeah, this book hit all my buttons:
*Made me tear up but not booger bawl
*Had me squirming but not bored with non-stop nookie.
*Has me writing down a wish list for sequels. It's a long list.
*Will have me re-reading this frequently.

Highly recommended! This one is going on my comfort food shelf!!

A Jackal Shifter Determined to Do the Right Thing and an Adorable Human Who Has A different Idea About What the Right Thing Is

Jackal shifters in a Mary Calmes story? I'm so on it! Just like her panther stories this one has a nice unique backdrop to it & just like everyone of her stories, its the sparkling characters & the delightful romance that makes them such engaging reading experiences.

Quade is a typical alpha male with a sense of duty & stubborn streak, but it is Roman who puts the fireworks & champagne bubbles into the relationship. Quade tells the story, but both men are prominent.

Through much of the story, it is a slow chase as Roman carefully and methodically corners his prey, Quade, into first acknowledging they have feelings for each other- deep feelings- and that they need to be together. Quade has a big secret that will more than likely change Roman's mind, but then there are those naggy feelings that he is way older than Roman and that its wrong to enter a relationship with your boss- the guy whom you are sworn to protect.

The second half of the story adds the issues from Quade's past when the pack and more importantly the family that kicked him out desperately need him to come back and fulfill his destiny since he's a natural born alpha. Oh and an ex and other attractive men start popping up at the most inconvenient times.

This book worked its magic on me as I both laughed at Roman's antics and got a big cheesy grin at the tender moments. The action scenes have a nice visceral quality that might come as unexpected for those who aren't used to the way the author can give you a tender romance alongside a gritty action sequence. Par for the course with Mary's books.
