About the Author
Patrick McCarthy is one of the few foreigners to actually teach karate-do in Japan. Moreover, he is recognized worldwide as one of the foremost authorities on the civil fighting traditions of Okinawa. He is also the first Westerner to ever be awarded the coveted Kyoshi 7th Dan Teacher's License from the Kyoto's prestigious Dai Nippon Butokukai. He has been practicing karate-do since the 1960s, and also studied a variety of Chinese, Southeast Asian, and western fighting arts. He is a 9th Dan and is also the author of Ancient Okinawan Martial Arts Volumes 1 and 2.

So, this is my 3rd Bubishi purchase. Well, 4th. But my 3rd as translated and presented by Mr. McCarthy.

I got this one for two reasons: that sweet new cover, and the additional material presented in addition to the Bubishi itself.

At the price, it's worth it alone for Mr. Andreas Quast's excellent history of the tome.

I'd go on and on about why a 'serious karate-ka' or whatever should own it, or how it can give insight into the ur-methods of kata design and technical interpretation (and the training methods which spring from such understanding), and a dozen other things.

But I won't.

If you have a copy, it's not going to enhance your martial art more than the previous edition. But it will give you more insight into the material, the journey it's been on, and an idea about the people that first walked that road.

If you don't have a copy, this one is a lower price than I paid for the last one, so it's a deal.

Stuart McAleese has over 15 years of professional experience of oil and gas industry operations gained worldwide. He gained his initial oil industry experience while employed with major oil industry service companies. He also worked as a staff Petroleum and Reservoir Engineer with operating oil companies and has extensive experience in the planning and supervision of wellsite operations including testing, well services and completions; he held the post of Senior and Chief Petroleum Engineer for various oil companies in the UK and overseas. In addition to his engineering skills, Stuart McAleese has significant management experience in operations and in the board room. His commercial skills have been brought to bear in licence negotiations with Oil and Gas Ministers and he has undertaken due diligence work for the stock market. He is a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers and previously served on the Board of Directors of the SPE, London Section. He graduated in 1984 with an honours degree in Applied Physics from the University of Strathclyde, Scotland. Currently he is an independent consultant for Esprit Petroleum Technology Ltd.

I believe this book fills a need that engineers always had. It explains in a very clear way how to do procedures in field operations and how to resolve different situations that can appear in oil and gas well testing... I really recommend it to the oil industry.

Interesting Book, Great Practice Exercises

Great book. Different philosophy about improv than other books I've read on the subject. Great exercises you can do by yourself to improve your skills.

Best book on improv on the market

Best book on improv on the market. I love this book because you could drop it in the middle of a desert and 4 months later snakes would be improvising scenes well without ever having watched an improv show.

Great book on improvisation, a must read!

So far I've read Chalma Halpern's "Truth in Comedy", Viola Spolin's "Improvisation for the Theater", Keith Johnstone's "Impro", and now this book, and I would say this one has the most useful information as far as *becoming a better stage improviser" goes. What I mean is that it is full of tips, advice, and useful things to consider, and seems meant for someone who has already knows a little bit about the BASICS. Mick Napier asks the reader to rethink some of the "rules" that the basic improv teaching lays down, while adding some important insights of his own.

In this sense, I think that "Truth In Comedy" is the best INTRO to improv, for someone just starting out. Then, I'd recommend "Improvise: Scene From The Inside Out" as a necessary followup, and then Keith Johnstone's "Impro" as a whole new viewpoint and also a deeper insight into the philosophy of being in the moment. (By the way, I would avoid the Viola Spolin book - it's written in a strangely stilted, boring, hard-to-read style, and really contains no memorable information).

Particularly useful in Napier's book are the "Exercises To Do At Home", which is something I've been looking for - most other books have exercises which are meant to be practiced in a group setting.

I found the chapter on "Improvisation & the Second Law Of Thermodynamics" to be unnecessary though - it didn't really add anything and seemed to be sort of a weird tangent. Luckily, it's short.

Anyhow, after reading this book I really do feel as if I understand a lot more about what separates a "great" improviser from a merely "good" one. Now comes the hard part - PRACTICING & GETTING UP THERE AND DOING IT!!!
