Leonard Stringfield was born in 1920. He was director of CRIFO (Civilian Research, Interplanetary Flying Objects) - one of the world's largest research groups during the mid-5Os, and publisher of its newsletter, ORBIT (1953-1957).

He also worked in cooperation with the United States Air Force (1953-1957), investigating and reporting UFO activity, having been assigned a special code number for reporting to the Air Defense Command in Columbus, Ohio.

For over 30 years, Stringfield served in several of the major UFO organizations in a public relations capacity. From 1957 to 1970, he was public relations adviser with the National Investigations Committee on Aerial Phenomena (NICAP). Later on, he was Director of Public Relations and a board member of the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON). He was also a regional investigator for the Center for UFO Studies, directed by Dr. J. Allen Hynek.

Stringfield was an executive with DuBois Chemicals, an international manufacturer. Stringfield retired in 1981 as Director of Public Relations and Marketing Services for DuBois Chemicals, a division of Chemed Corp., after 31 years service with the company.

From 1967-1968 he served as Early Warning Coordinator for the University of Colarado UFO Project, screening UFO reports for possible scientific study.

Inside "Ufology's Hot Kitchen"
By Johns
Dated June 1991, Leonard Stringfield's sixth Status Report is by far the longest, at 140 pages, but I prefer the first three ones, as they just had details of various reports. With this sixth one, he includes details of other people's findings. He begins by recounting his experience when he delivered his first speech at a MUFON conference in 1978. J. Allen Hynek sat close to the front. A reported CIA official is quoted: "If Stringfield had said certain things about crash and retrievals, Hynek would have taken over." Stringfield states that Hynek demanded names and details from him. (In his book Revelations, Jacques Vallee states that Hynek met Stringfield several times.)

There is more on Roswell. It seems that a B-29 transported the bodies to Fort Worth on 9th July 1947, according to reported eyewitness testimony. As for the bodies, there were "autopsies of midget people with mongoloid heads that were accidentally exposed to high doses of radiation at Los Alamos" and a nurse stated that there were "human experiments for biological and nuclear medicine research." She saw small bodies with deformed heads and limbs and "thought they may have come from Japan after the war." The names Von Braun, Condon , Oppenheimer and Teller are mentioned in connection with this.

The issue of whether bodies associated with the Roswell incident are humans that had been experimented on, or aliens, is not satisfactorily resolved. Another list of names is mentioned: General Groves, Oppenheimer, Bush, von Neumann, von Karman, Steinhoff, LaPaz.

A craft with the same insignia as that on the reported 1964 Socorro craft makes a reappearance, this time near Tong Li Sap, Cambodia, 1972. A US Army Special Operations Group were reportedly engaged in a firefight with the occupants of an identified alien craft. The platoon reportedly happened on a group of aliens sorting human body parts in to large bins and sealing them. The craft reportedly emitted a high pitched hum. The encounter was supposedly reported to a representative of "MAJIC".

Future mind control author Armen Victorian appears in the pages. Also known as Henry Azadehdel, details are presented into his and UFO Crash at Aztec author William Steinman's investigation of Eric Walker, a scientist who reportedly was present at the Kecksburg reported UFO crash. Stringfield also presents Victorian/Azadehdel's interesting investigation into a reported UFO crash in South Africa in May 1989.

There is also an extensive report conducted by the Long Island UFO Network on a reported downing of a UFO at Moriches Bay, Long Island, New York in 1989, including pseudonymous testimony by a supposed scientist who says he discovered the technology on the alien craft to be crystalline-based.

Stringfield also presents details of hoax photos of aliens, including the New Mexico alien with a zipper. Editor of Flying Saucer Review Gordon Creighton stated that Timothy Good considered the photo might be genuine, however Stringfield states, "Facts, however, show that the alien was nothing more than a wax dummy, lying prone under a plexiglas canopy, on exhibition in Montreal, Canada, dating back to 1967."

Consistently entertaining reading, if nothing else.

CHARACTERISTICS OF RECOMMENDED TRANSITION PRACTICES

Adolescents with autism require specialized support and planning throughout their transition from school to adult life. Thoughtful transition planning is needed whether the student is continuing on to college or is seeking employment with supports through a community provider or vocational rehabilitation agency. Consider the importance of having a framework or guidelines to follow in transition planning for each student. Each student is different, yet there must be consistency to approaching the design of a transition plan. It will be important for the transition team to use recommended practices when supporting the student with autism through this transition. The five guidelines or practices we see in transition planning for students with autism are

  • Implementing positive behavior supports to address behavior challenges
  • Matching the IEP to a vision for the future
  • Capitalizing on inclusive experiences
  • Providing a variety of community-based job and life experiences
  • Coordinating a smooth transition to new resources and service providers in the community
  • Each of these important practices and their relevance to individuals with autism are described briefly here and in more depth in other chapters.

Implementing Positive Behavior Supports to Address Behavior Challenges

It is clear that many individuals with autism display challenging behaviors. In addition, the characteristics of autism lead to a need for increased communication and social skills and decreased problematic or repetitive behaviors. Thus, it is important for parents, teachers, and other direct service providers to understand the purpose of students’ behavior and develop positive behavior support plans for students. Chapter 2 provides an overview of the skills teachers need in order to analyze the purposes of students’ challenging behavior and implement a plan to decrease those behaviors while increasing adaptive behavior.

Matching the Individualized Education Program to a Vision for the Future

Middle and high school mark important changes in the school curriculum for all students. Perhaps one of the most significant is the increased choice that young people have when they enter middle school. Instead of being provided with the same curriculum as everyone else in their class and year, middle school students are offered choices of classes and electives. This provision of choice in the curriculum demonstrates the acknowledgment that youth are beginning to explore their own interests and abilities and will eventually choose a course of study that leads them to their own personal career path. Some youth will go on to college and study science, human services, art, or music. Some youth will go to work in mechanics, in construction, or in administration. Curriculum choice reflects the importance of looking forward, not back. By the end of elementary school, all students leave behind the basics and, ready or not, move on to a course of study that matches their interests.

It is important that this same change occur for middle and high school students with autism. Rather than focus on the missing developmental skills a person with autism may have, his or her curriculum should look forward to the potential career path the individual will follow. This critical shift should be reflected in the IEP process. Adolescence is the time to identify skills that will result in meeting the vision that the person and his or her family have for adulthood. Even for individuals who will go on to college, it is critical to begin to shape the curriculum based on plans for the individual’s adult life.

In short, the task of education from middle school forward is one of getting a life. When considering education from that point of view, it becomes clear that skill selection is a key process. The issue of getting a life also raises the question of what kind of life a person with autism should seek. The answer to that question is the life of the individual’s vision and dreams. Chapter 3 will provide a roadmap for teachers seeking to understand this process and encourage the development of IEPs that match the student’s strengths, interests, and vision for the future. In Chapter 3, you will read about the importance of assessment, career development, person-centered planning, and IEP development. All of these processes require that adolescents with autism be involved and, as much as possible, speak for themselves. When an individual cannot communicate his or her feelings or wishes about these matters, the team must consider how the student has expressed preferences through the varied experiences he or she has had in school. The result is an IEP that is focused on the student and has included the student in its development.

    Capitalizing on Inclusive Experiences

The best place to teach many students with disabilities, including autism, is with their peers who do not have disabilities. Rather than a philosophy or movement, inclusion should be viewed as a tool that can address both academic and social skill development while meeting students’ individual needs. Specifically, inclusive experiences present students with autism the opportunity to observe, learn, and practice social skills with peers who do not have disabilities.

When well supported and implemented, inclusion also affords individuals with autism the opportunity to gain access to the general education curriculum under the guidance of both special and general educators who are highly qualified. Thus, inclusion serves a very important role in helping adolescents with autism meet state standards while practicing social skills in natural environments. Chapter 4 describes how to properly plan and implement supports for successful inclusion to address the needs of students with autism in meeting state standards and accomplishing social skill practice in natural environments.

Providing a Variety of Community-Based Job and Life Experiences

One key to success in employment is having previous work experience. Working is a unique experience in that the types of relationships, the way tasks are completed, and the way co-workers interact are all governed by stated and unstated rules. Rules for customer care and reporting to a boss are unique to and only observed in work environments. Thus, they are best learned at work. Likewise, there are stated and unstated rules that govern other public environments, such as restaurants and grocery stores. The best place to learn the rules of these environments is in each environment itself. Because of the difficulty that many individuals with autism experience when attempting to generalize skills from one setting to another, it is important to teach them in the environment in which they will use the skills—in real settings outside the classroom, such as internships, work-study situations, part- or full-time paid work, or even volunteering. Chapter 5 presents strategies that will enable teachers to teach these skills, while Chapters 7, 8, 9, and 10 present strategies on developing and providing instruction in work-, community-, and home-based settings.

Coordinating a Smooth Transition to New Resources and Service Providers in the Community

An important aspect of transition planning is to connect the person with autism and his or her support system to all of the resources and service providers available to adults with disabilities. With a thorough understanding of families’ needs and pertinent adult services, IEP and transition team members will be better suited to address students’ and families’ needs. This is the major way family support occurs for transition-age youth with autism. By connecting youth and their families with resources and service providers while students are still in high school, the teacher can continue to support students’ transition in the classroom by implementing changes based on the recommendations of service providers and obtaining new services through the transition referral process. As the person with autism makes the transition from high school to the community, workplace, or college, more and more adult service providers should participate in the development and implementation of the plan. The teacher’s role during this aspect of transition is to provide all of the necessary introductions across the team and to facilitate the development of a plan that allows the person with autism and the entire team to interact together successfully. Chapter 6 and the Resource Guide at the end of the book address teachers’ and parents’ need for information about those important services.

    PULLING IT ALL TOGETHER

As noted previously, adolescence is a difficult time full of challenges. Students without disabilities struggle to find their way to their future. Students with autism face additional challenges due to their disabilities. The critical factor in the success of transition for adolescents with autism is determined by the people who comprise their team. In order to achieve success beyond the classroom, the team must listen well to the student and his or her parents regarding their vision for the future and plan carefully to assist the student in achieving that vision.

Good resource for job sample assessments; case studies add illustration to procedures.

Purchased this book for MA level class. Good introduction to complex world of maturing individuals with autism. At times, suggestions for interventions and supports take on mentalist approach to coordinate treatment via many professionals; a real-world approach for those who have limited supports available. This text tells you what to teach, not how to teach it, and how to navigate financial/academic/employment challenges facing the individual with autism.

Old school still has its distinct charm
    By Parka
[[VIDEOID:moWWGDBBEZU7V7]]Looking through the art in this book, one would not have guessed that Disney actually decided to phase out traditional animation in 2004. The Princess and the Frog essentially marks a comeback, a representation of what Disney used to be. That's good news for all fans of traditional animation.

The Art of The Princess and the Frog is filled character designs, background art and storyboards. The art is unmistakeably Disney-style -- the caricature style of characters, stylized set designs and lush colours. The story is set in New Orleans and there are plenty of background paintings in different moods. The characters are lively and backgrounds beautiful.

The team of contributing artists is impressive. There are new artists as well as familiar names. It's impossible to name all but those whose name keep appearing are Rik Maki, Armand Baltazar, Bill Schwab, James Aaron Finch (production designer), Ian Gooding (art director), Sue Nichols, Mark Henn, Chris Appelhans, Kevin Gollaher and many more.

The artists and staff contribute numerous interesting quotes. They talk about the creative process, characters, the set and a bit on the story. There are stuff like what they did or where they went for research, inspiration and influence from older classic animated films. All interesting and insightful to read.

This book a refreshing and welcome look back at traditional art, after being exposed to so much digital animation. Old school still has its distinct charm.

Beautiful art book for a beautifully made film
    By Z. Daniek
As a huge fan of traditional 2D animation, I had to own this book. Princess and the Frog is the last 2D film produced by Disney Animation (at least for now) and it is a beautifully produced movie that shows the warmth and personality available with the medium. I personally really love this film and I was thrilled to see the visual development art that was created for it. The book is beautiful and definitely worth tracking down if you are a fan of 2D animation, Disney or this movie specifically.
The book is no longer in print so I had to track down a used copy and I'm glad I purchased it from PTP Flash Deals. The seller shipped promptly and the book arrived in very sturdy packaging in excellent condition. The condition of the used book itself was as advertised with only slight wear to the dust jacket. I will definitely look to this seller again for future purchases.

There are definitely other Art of titles that I enjoy more, but if you are a collector of the Art of books then there is no question that you should pick this one up. You won't be disappointed.

Finally on double CD again, but what about that piano sound?
    By A Customer
If there was only one album that I could take to a deserted island, "Gone to Earth" would be it. In my opinion, this piece of atmospheric pop-chique is the best Sylvian ever did. So when the remaster was released, I went and got it right away.
There are some obvious bonusses to this particular release: For the first time since the long-deleted japanese version you get the full album on CD. And not only the four tracks that went missing on the single CD release are back, but also three very interesting new mixes of River Man, Gone to Earth, and Camp Fire-Coyote Country. If it had been my choice I would have put the new mixes at the end of the second disc, so that you could first enjoy the full length of the original album, but then again, a CD player can be programmed...
Since the MUSIC of the original release has been commented on often enough, I will concentrate on the SOUND of this remaster, to give an indication for all those audiophiles out there... Does it sound better? Quite a bit! The overall sound is deeper, wider and more dynamic. There is more 'space' too. The drums in Before the Bullfight (one of my favourite tracks when listening to new audio equipment) are thundering like they were recorded only yesterday. David's voice is more focussed, and the inner detail of the cymbals and other high-pitched sounds has increased by at least 25% without getting too bright. But what about that piano sound? In Laughter and Forgetting something weird has happened. On the original release the sound of the piano is not very bright, but straight. On this remaster it is brighter, but it sounds as if a high-rated chorus has been added.
A bit like in the old days, when you would play a cassette on a deck with a dirty pinch-roller.

Maybe this "effect" was actually added during the recording, and it is only now that it can be heard because of the remaster, but I doubt that. It almost gives reason to assume that the tape that was used for this remaster was not the original master, but some copy that has been lying around on some shelf for too long.
There is another downside too. Like the other remasters of Sylvians work, this one has that wretched Copy Control thing on it. And this introduces some serious problems. Playing it on my DVDplayer gives a lot of pops and clicks, my car-stereo has the same problems with it, and my computer will not play it at all.
Oh yes, there is a disclaimer in very small printing, and some yada-yada-ing about stealing a CD from a store.
Don't get me wrong. Large scale illegal copying WILL harm the music industry, so I'm not into that. But if the weapons against piracy will damage the sound or affect the way a disc plays on different equipment, it feels like another lost battle to me.
At this moment, there is NO copy protection that will NOT influence the sound of a compact disc.
So I'm left wondering what this remaster would have sounded like if the digital Copy Control data had not been embedded in the bits that make up the music signal.
And because of that I'm forced to extract one star of the possible five, and give this very essential remaster a score of just 4.

    Silver Moon still shines!
    By Samuli Repo
Having (almost accidentally!) loved and cherished this particular album since it came out, I think it is time for me to do my bit for this marvellous piece of music!

First of all, let me state that this was my first Sylvian album. I must confess though that back then, I bought Gone to Earth merely on a whim - just because the cover seemed strangely inviting. I did not have a slighest clue on what to expect of the music itself, when I lowered my not-so-hifi record player's stylus into the first grooves of what was to become a fixture in my all-time favourites for years to come. Well, it did initially sound a bit strange. (I blush to remember thinking: maybe I can still take this back to the shop and get my money back!) At that time, I was -to an extent- already familiar with the featured guitarist, Robert Fripp, of King Crimson fame, but this was very different, something like... oh well. Silver Moon seemed to be the only piece of music that was accessible and beautiful on the first go. It took a few listens to get used to the almost tribal and scarce drumming, the meandering atmospherics, Kenny Wheeler's trumpet soloing, and the second lp filled with nearly static instrumental pieces. But in the end I got the message.

And I'm still wondering what that message is, actually! However: once your appetite has been whetted, this album keeps you coming back for more.

Gone to Earth is now available in its entirety on cd, hooray with knobs on for that. But as for saying very much more about the actual musical contents, I'm afraid I'd mostly be preaching for the converted. I guess this is simply one of those albums that every fan has a very personal relationship with, and trying to share those experiences might just appear silly. And anyway - I do not know how (and why) to try and convert anyone to succumb to the charms of this music. So, a few words in general.

The earlier single-disc cd pressing omitted some of the atmospheric instrumental pieces, and it's good to have them back at last so that the album is "complete". There are a few bonus tracks, remixes and stuff, but personally I do not think very much of them to be honest. Enjoyable as they may be in their own right, for someone like me with a long history of listening to the original lp issue, they do not belong to this album. Still, this is no major complaint because it's easy enough to skip listening to them.

As an artistically inclined aside, the packaging is also quite lavish - however, nothing can beat the good old lp gatefold sleeve! The original lp issue had a peculiar inner gatefold design involving a slab of something that seemed like molten gold on a flowing, dark-blue background, sadly dropped from this reissue.

The remastered sound is maybe a tad stronger in presence and clearer than on the previous single-cd issue. But again, I do not give very much weight on this matter. It is the music itself that counts for me; I'm no sound engineer or hi-fi specialist. Maybe it is only a matter of personal taste. Curiously enough, I remember reading somewhere that Sylvian himself was uncomfortable with the final mix of "Wave", and it's always been my personal favourite on this album - I wouldn't have changed a single detailo in the arrangement! Well I guess there's a lesson to be learnt from this.

All in all: I can just say that Gone to Earth still sounds fantastic, but I do not know whether it's because of "the depth or the surface", so to speak. I managed to enjoy this album immensely, scratches and all, in it's lp format, and can just say that this beautiful pair of cd's is an essential part of any adventurous music lover's collection. I neither know nor care very much whether this album ever reaches a widely accepted classic status, given the distance of time; I hate to think so but probably this album will sink into obscurity and oblivion in the years to come. However, for you who have had the patience to wade through this review so far: if you like things that might take a bit of time but give immense rewards, Gone to Earth is VERY strongly recommended - alongside with Brilliant Trees and Secrets of the Beehive by the same artist.

    Sylvian's sound coalesces.
    By Michael Stack
In 1985, David Sylvian entered the studio for what was then his most ambitious project-- a double album, conceived as having one vocal LP and one instrumental LP. A chance, as it were, to continue all of the work he'd done in the past. The resulting album, "Gone to Earth", was a distinct improvement over both his previous instrumental efforts ("Alchemy-- An Index of Possibilites") and vocal efforts ("Brilliant Trees").

Assembling a series of musicians including former Japan drummer Steve Jansen and keyboardist Richard Barbieri, guitarists Robert Fripp and Bill Nelson, trumpeter Kenny Wheeler and saxaphonist Mel Collins, sylvian constructed two albums, each of which I'll tackle separately.

One the vocal disc, Sylvian takes the moody sound he worked with on his previous LP and drags it deep into a jazz infused vein-- supported generously by a number of players with a jazz pedigree, he can evoke the mood well. Check the gentle swing of passionate love song "Wave" (with some stunning leads from Robert Fripp), piano ballad "Laughter and Forgetting" (which as a trumpet player I can safely say I'm in awe of Wheeler's solo) or the lurching "River Man". Throughout the disc, Sylvian's voice has developed a depth and range of emotion that allows him to carry pieces like "Before the Bullfight" into a mournful state without ever being pathetic. In the midst of all this, we get at least one stunning Japanesque piece ("Taking the Veil") and one piece composed as a duet between guitarist Robert Fripp's fractured playing and Sylvian's vocal (the title track "Gone to Earth", first forerunner into the direction Sylvian would pursue over a decade later on "Blemish"). In fact, the only weakness for me is "Silver Moon", a somewhat overly bright jazz-pop song that doesn't the record at all.

The instrumental disc is the full realization of where Sylvian had been trying to go with the instrumental compositions he'd been working over the past several years, from the minimalist work on Japan's albums (as early as "The Tenant" on "Obscure Alternatives") to the previous year's "The Stigma of Childhood (Kin)". The best pieces feature a hazy soundscape from Sylvian over which Bill Nelson ("The Healing Place", "Answered Prayers"), "B.J. Cole ("Silver Moon Over Sleeping Steeples") or Robert Fripp ("Camp Fire: Coyote Country", "Upon this Earth") provide a solo, butr as a rule, the material is of stunning beauty, in particular "Camp Fire: Coyote Country", where Fripp plays one of the best solos of his career, bar none.

This reissue is the first time the entire recording has been released on CD, having had several tracks hacked off to squeeze it onto one CD, and features pristine remastered sound that really helps bring out the best of the recording. The material is augmented by three relatively unessential remixes (all things being even, the album tracks stand well enough on their own). All of this is housed in a quite lovely double digipack. All in all, a great package for a great album. Not quite as good as "Secrets of the Beehive", but a great work in it's own right. Highly recommended.

"A fascinating book that I could not putdown. It's fast, furious and truly compelling, If Michael were alive I am surehe would have been very proud of Mike Smallcombe's book. This truly is it, amust read" - Kathryn Milofsky, ExecProducer Brian Oxman Show

    From the Author
Like millions across the globe, I was shocked when Michael died on that unforgettable day in June 2009. He kept a low profile after the image-shattering second child abuse allegations culminated in an acquittal in court four years earlier. But three months before his untimely death, he announced 50 shows at London's O2 Arena as part of a comeback tour called This Is It. All 50 dates sold out in record time, and I somehow obtained tickets for the opening night on July 8, which was later pushed back five days. After Michael's death, which placed him in the spotlight more than ever before, I read the few credible Michael Jackson biographies that were available. Although they provide plenty of insight, the primary focus is the personal life; in terms of his career, there are several gaps. There is almost zero information about Michael's final three studio albumsDangerous,HIStoryandInvincible, or the remix albumBlood on the Dance Floor. Other gaps include parts of Michael's career outside the studio, such as the world tours, his fall out with Sony Music, his movie dreams, his work in the secretive last five years of his life and the preparations for This Is It. I couldn't fathom how there wasn't a book based solely on the 45-year career of a man many believe to be the greatest entertainer of all time. Then, one night early in 2010, something just clicked. I felt confident I could take on the challenge. I wanted to know a different Michael Jackson; to discover the untold stories and secrets behind an enthralling, albeit turbulent career. The aim was to write a biography about a whole other life; the Michael Jackson who made making music his life's work rather than the one portrayed on the front pages of the tabloids. I wanted to delve deeper into his career than ever before, and I didn't want to leave any stones unturned. But it was also important to remain objective and not take a fan's point of view.
