Following a consideration of diagnostic tests, clinical features are described and illustrated by a wealth of high-quality full-colour images. Medical and surgical management are then discussed for each condition. Conditions of the dog and cat are mostly considered separately, except where there are close similarities.

The last two chapters of the Manual briefly describe ocular conditions of rabbits and exotic species (primates, rodents, birds, reptiles and fish), with emphasis on the commoner disorders and those that differ markedly from the conditions already described for the dog and cat.

This new Manual builds on the success of the first edition of the BSAVA Manual of Small Animal Ophthalmology.

This new edition begins with a clear and concise guide to the examination of the eye. He is an award winning teacher and counselor in the Minneapolis Public Schools and is on the faculty of The Meditation Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA. The Meditation Center is associated with the Himalayan Tradition of Yoga and Meditation. He is an Internationally Certified Yoga and Meditation Teacher (E-RYT 500) and an Internationally Certified Biofeedback Practitioner (bcia.org). Swami Hari: I am a simple forest monk

This collection of essays and poems written around the life and teachings of Sri Swami Hariharananda Bharati is a personal, insightful, and thought provoking journey into spiritual answers about how best to live one's life. Daniel skillfully weaves the Himalayan Yoga Meditation Tradition teachings of Swami Hari, with his own many years of personal practice of yoga and meditation, to leave the reader with a view of life that is practical, beautiful and elevating. Swami Hariharananda was an amazing and beloved Himalayan Master, who after living in isolation in the sacred Tarkeshwar shrine in the Himalayan Foothills for 11 years, was suddenly turned into a world traveler. Swami Hari traveled many times to the US, Canada, Europe, and other countries where his great love and laughter (which earned him the name, the laughing swami) and profound teachings made life richer and more joyous for hundreds of people. In India Swami Hari devoted himself to building schools for the poor Himalayan children so they could learn English in the English Medium School and learn trades to use in the local communities in the Technical and Vocational school at Malaithi. Having spent years in intimate contact with Swami Hari Daniel is able to bring the very presence of this Sage to the pages of his book. I highly recommend Daniel's book to all of those who would like to have a glimpse into the joyous life and teachings of this humble Himalayan monk.

Review of Swami Hari: I am a simple forest monk

Swami Hariharananda Bharati was one of the most amazing people I've ever met. Seeming so simple yet wise, and so very big-hearted and funny. When I'd see him, my heart would smile and laugh as he did so often.

This lovely book captures the Swami Hariharananda I and so many others knew and loved. Swami Hariharanda's laugh can be heard from the pages, as can his wonderful way of speaking. More than this, the book shares wisdom gleaned from Daniel's own practice of yoga and from time spent with this mountain Sage.

Swami Hari was a real Himalayan Sage. If you've not experienced one, read this book. As much as a book can, it gives a feeling for this amazing man.

This book is a wonderful tribute to a remarkable sage, who those of us who knew him called the laughing swami. The book has excellent photos and presents not only his story but also his important teachings. It makes a great gift, and is a "must read" for all students of Yoga.

Dated at places, otherwise excellent

The scope of Jelavich's second volume of her "History of the Balkans" actually covers the last several decades of the nineteenth century and ends with the early 1980s, when it was published. No updated editions were ever published. This unfortunately makes an otherwise exemplary historiographical work somewhat dated. Jelavich's analysis of events and developments in the communist Romania, Albania and Bulgaria, as well as Greece is, however, a good summary of the history of these countries from 1945 to the early 1980s. Where the book is obviously dated is in its coverage of the former Yugoslavia: in her conclusions, the author implies a generally positive course for this country based on its relative successes until then in economic and overall social development. Nonetheless, her examination of socialist Yugoslavia does provide a view into the country's flaws, which would eventually lead to its violent collapse in 1991. Jelavich's treatment of the late 19th century, the two World Wars and the interwar is comprehensive and very informative; the author's vast knowledge of numerous primary sources and the extensive secondary literature on this region comes to the fore here. Although Jelavich's strength is her knowledge of political and diplomatic history, she provides a strong analysis of the region's underlying economic problems (which in all countries considered is the relative technological backwardness). The only weakness of this volume is the short-shrift given to cultural/social issues - thus, very little is said about literary and artistic activity, or the effects of the vast social change in Western Europe and the U.S. on the various Balkan countries. Her overall conclusion is obviously a bit dated since all of the communist regimes have since fallen. Nevertheless, this is an excellent integrated history which is broken down into logical chronological and geopolitical sections, making it also useful as a reference work.

A weighty, serious tome for serious readers

This text is now a bit dated: it does not cover the tumultuous events of the 90s. This book, nevertheless, covers what took place earlier in the 20th century with great depth and balance. Jelavich's book is for any person who wants a serious look into the history of the Balkans. Such knowledge is a must and a primer for a true understanding of the "balkanization" of the Balkans in the 1990s. If you want a quick, light read, this book in NOT for you. This book is at times heavy and hard, but is worth the effort.

Balkan History

The Balkans have been invaded and occupied by half a dozen major powers since the seventeenth century and was a key element leading to world war I. It is still an area of conflict today, but in spite of that it is difficult to find a comprehensive history of their struggle for independence and nationhood. The author has spent much of her life researching the Balkans and her books document their history over the last three hundred years. I would recommend purchasing both volumes I and II.

A. The push to make ops easier, definitely. Over the past 5 years we've seen various tools and practices emerge which aim to lower the barrier to entry to effectively running web applications. Vagrant helps push this down and I'm working on more tools to just that, as are many others.

Good introduction to Vagrant

I enjoyed "Vagrant: Up and Running" and think it is a good introduction to Vagrant. The book is a nice complement to the "Getting Started Guide" on the project website. New users and people with zero Vagrant experience will be able to pick up this book and learn everything they need to start using Vagrant and getting the most out of it.

The last chapter covers Vagrant plugins and should be very helpful for plugin developers. Mitchell does a good job of explaining how to create command, configuration and provisioner plugins, and he steps through several complete examples in this section of the book. In my opinion, this chapter is the best existing documentation on Vagrant plugin development.

However, I'm only giving this book three stars because as good as it is I think it still leaves a lot to be desired. There are numerous spelling and grammar errors in the book. The quality of writing isn't particularly good; for example, there is an awful lot of repetitive writing that is tiresome to read and just feels like filler, and the way v1 vs v2 configuration is described and handled in the book felt awkward.

But the biggest problem with the book is the plugin chapter (which, interestingly, is also probably the most valuable part of the book!). In particular, there are two problematic aspects.

First, by Mitchell's own admission this chapter's coverage of plugin development is incomplete. He explains this is because the API and architecture of host, guest and provider plugins aren't that common and are also about to undergo major changes. Personally, I think if these plugin types are so uncommon then it is actually more important to cover them here, because there will be fewer examples in the wild that other developers can study. Also, I wonder why he and O'Reilly didn't just hold publication until after the API changes. In my opinion it would be better to wait longer for the book to come out if that means its coverage will be more comprehensive, rather than ending the most valuable chapter in the book with "there's this other stuff I didn't want to talk about, but if you're curious you can always read the source."

Second, the difference between the v1 and v2 configurations is confusing. Mitchell explains this is because the v1.1 series introduced some non-backwards compatible changes (and then he repeats this several more times throughout the rest of the chapter), but it still just feels... half-baked. I applaud Vagrant's commitment to backwards compatibility, and I understand the technical reasons as he explains them. But the way it is handled just feels awkward. I wonder if it wouldn't have been better just to focus exclusively on the v1 configuration and never mention the existence of the v2 configuration. Since the v1.0 series is the current stable release and v2.0 is still a ways off, I think it would be fine to only cover the stable configuration and leave the newer stuff to a future edition of the book. Alternatively, as I mentioned before, I think he and O'Reilly should have delayed publication until Vagrant 2.0. It just feels muddled that there are these different configuration versions, and he goes to such pains to explain them and the reason why they exist and what Vagrant's version numbers mean, but then he skips discussing a few different plugin types because they're about to change.

Fantastic bootstrap learning resource

We have been using Vagrant for about six months now. I have put off too long diving into the subject. The fact that I could put it off is a demonstration of one of Vagrant's strengths: a team can use it without having a lot of knowledge about how it works. It just works. But as an engineer, I wanted to know more about how our Vagrant environments were configured, especially since we're now using Docker inside Vagrant, and I was not entirely clear on the boundaries between my host machine, Vagrant, a VirtualBox, and Docker containers.

In about 4 hours, I was able to work through the first six of seven chapters of the book, including time to experiment with creating and destroying Vagrant environments. The last little exercise was creating a two-node cluster, one of which installed and ran MySQL, the other installed and ran Apache. And then confirming that networking was running properly between them, and the host. Along the way, I won't say I gained a complete education on the ins and outs of Vagrant, but I learned much, and now feel confident that I can go to Vagrant's online documentation and find any further information I need. This book did a great job of explaining the why as well as the how of Vagrant.

Considering I got this as a Kindle book for about half the print price, it was really a great bargain. If you're looking to bootstrap your knowledge of Vagrant, I recommend this book.

(One little sidenote: If you try the hostonly example, and the 192.168.33.* subnet doesn't work for you, try 192.168.133.*.)

Very Good Starting Point (Needs updates)

This is a perfect primer and I wish I had sprung the cash to buy this instead of trying to fumble through the online documentation. The only issue I have with this book is that it's not up to date. With version two of the Vagrant API you'll have to adjust many of the commands in the book to the new version which kind of makes the examples moot. All that aside the theoretical and philosophical basis for this vm provisioner is very clearly explained in this book. Definitely worth buying on Kindle, but I hope they update the content soon.

ANURAG S. RATHORE is a consultant of Biotech CMC Issues. He is also a faculty at the Department of Chemical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, India. His previous roles included management positions at Amgen Inc., Thousand Oaks, California and Pharmacia Corp., St. Louis, Missouri. His areas of interest include process development, scale-up, technology transfer, process validation, process analytical technology and quality by design. He has authored more than 180 publications and presentations in these areas. He is presently serving as the Editor-in-Chief of Preparative Biochemistry and Biotechnology and serves on the Editorial Advisory Boards for Biotechnology Progress, BioPharm International, Pharmaceutical Technology Europe and Separation and Purification Reviews. Gail Sofer: After serving as the director of Regulatory Services at BioReliance for 6 years, Dr. Sofer has recently joined GE Healthcare (formerly Amersham Biosciences) as the director of Regulatory Compliance in a new consulting team. Her publications include numerous articles and book chapters on downstream processing, virus inactivation, and validation. She has also coedited and authored several books. She serves on the Science Advisory Board of PDA, the Editorial Advisory Boards of BioPharm, BioQuality, and BioProcess International, and the Scale-Up Advisory Board of Genetic Engineering News. She chairs a PDA task force on virus filters and is cochair of the ASTM subcommittee on Adventitious Agents for Tissue Engineered Medical Products. She holds an M.S. degree in biochemistry from the University of Miami.

The content is almost identical to the existing book

The content of this book is almost identical to the book entitled Process Validation in manufacturing of Biopharmaceuticals edited by Anurag Singh Rathore and Gail Sofner From Informa. Only a few title is newly added. I have no idea other titles are revised or updated because I have no intention to purchase this kind of repetition book.

The third edition of Process Validation in Manufacturing of Biopharmaceuticals is a mix of new and updated chapters. I particularly enjoyed reading the chapters on new US FDA guidance on process validation, risk based validation and process validation with a CMO. Overall, I felt the book remains THE reference on the subject of process validation, particularly for biotech therapeutics and is a timeless reference and guide on the subject and is applicable to any drug manufacturing process that employs chromatography. Kudos to the editors and authors for such a great job!

Review for the book- Porcess Validation in Manufacturing of Biopharmaceuticals, 2012

Excellent reference resource; perhaps you need a deep understanding of validation to follow it. My suggestion is to include examples (483's, approval letters etc...) or to design activities you can use with prospective students that are required to use it as a textbook for a process validation course.
