Four brain quadrants: Ned Herrmann > Katherine Benziger > Bertrand Babinet > Healing Toolbox.org
By Healing Toolbox
Significance of Katherine Benziger for Energy Medicine practitioners
Note ~ A detailed, scholarly summary of KB’s career can be found at her site: http://benziger.org/about-Dr-Benziger.html
Katherine’s significance is tied to Ned Herrmann. Ned ‘uncovered’ the four-brain-quadrant model in the late 1970s. Katherine is one of his students. If new to you, a four-fold, quadrant model of active thinking and feeling is a stable and reliable basis for locating and measuring individual thinking style preferences.
Ned has various books; Whole Brain Business Book, his last book, is the one recommended by several reviewers, me included. Ned’s goal was expanding self-understanding and enabling creative thinking. His methods were pen and paper self-evaluations, "kite diagrams," and live, in-person games-small group exercises, reserved for his paying corporate gigs.
I honor Ned as innovating the first clear intellectual understanding of the first whole-brain model, four quadrants. Four quadrants explains much more of our psyche than only right and left brain hemispheres can. Four brain quadrants remains one of the most stable of new brain ideas and takes up much of the slack since the “demise” of the triune brain model in the 1990s.
Katherine expanded and deepened Ned's bare-bones concept in both more organic and more practical directions. This is why Healing Toolbox calls Katherine Benziger Ned’s most gifted and accomplished student. If innovators in Ned’s org, HBDI, have surpassed Katherine’s accomplishments, I’m open to that. Maybe you can inform me.
How brain quadrants evolved further and beyond Ned and Katherine takes us to Bertrand Babinet. To complete the historical sequence sketch, between 1985-1995, Bertrand expanded and stabilized Ned’s idea, by applying it to our two brains, gut and head. The rest of how the four quadrants evolved, is beyond our scope here.
In explaining brain quadrants to people over the years, I find it’s essential to encourage listeners to “slow down” here and consider the model of brain quadrants apart from
literal anatomy and literal physiology.
The paradox here is brain quadrants and brain anatomy are both real, both valid logical levels of our psyche. Both-And.
This is a paradox faced often by spiritual seekers and metaphysicians. Students of metaphysics practice holding two seemingly incompatible logical levels in mind at the same time; until, their natural connections appear or the connections are proven to be imaginary.
Few to no doctrinaire hard scientists, attending to only second order Galilean-Cartesian-Newtonian science; and, ignoring first and third order sciences, have much interest in the kind of inner work students of metaphysics must learn to progress.
This tactic exactly is the key to uncovering additional logical levels in our psyche: to conceive of two different logical levels, in our psyche, each with different logics, intelligence and genius, and consider if it’s reasonable they work together as part of the synergy in the hologram of our psyche.
Brain quadrants are unconscious and invisible. They are not visible—and never will be—visible on the dissection table. This does not lessen heir reality, compared to brain anatomy and physiology, that is visible on a dissection table. Brain quadrants are real in our etheric body not our physical body. Some students of metaphysics have written about this, how adjacent frequency levels can be quite distinct and different from each other in appearance, if not in frequency. Phillip Nolan’s Inception movie makes this point emphatically and uses it as a plot point.
The non-physical logical levels of our psyche are testable and verifiable—in the domain of single individuals. Self-muscle-testing since the mid-1970s in Brain Gym was the start of this, expanding slowly from that origin.
Virtually the same gap existing between brain anatomy-physiology and brain quadrants exists between conscious self and inner child. One believes it is “real” and physical; the other just is on another frequency level.
So if you already think the inner child is real, you have made the imaginative leap to the level where brain quadrants are real.
Both “inner child” and “brain quadrants” are the beginning, an opening door, into Unconscious Patterns 101. https://www.createspace.com/4899109
Benziger and Herrmann did not attempt to verify the reality of brain quadrants with self-testing, to my knowledge. For them brain quadrants existed as a kind of metaphoric logic. Its only proof was in its practical application, where results were repeatable.
This exactly parallels the dilemma Touch for Health faced for decades. By 1990 T4H was fading as it failed to establish a workable theoretical method to support its clinical successes as a method. Finally in 2014, the solution seems to have appeared, Goethean holistic Science and the Three Sciences we use every day. See these at HealingToolbox.org and in the coming Holistic Psychology 2.0.
A precise anatomical-physiological model of the four-fold, quadrant nature of active thinking and feeling is still a decade or more away—if it’s possible at all.
Why use a model of our psychic function possible to validate and verify by only a few outsiders? Because brain quadrants afford users FOUR TIMES the precision and reliability of 19th century brain models and TWO TIMES the precision and reliability of the right and left brain hemisphere model of brain function.
Katherine Benziger’s Thriving in Mind book
These Goodreads reviews captures a lot of what’s difficult to capture about her book:
I liked the book. The book was a bit more scientific then I expected it to be and typically the more technical/scientific the book, the faster I am overwhelmed and I stop reading. However, surprisingly... this was not the case with this book. Although scientific, I was able to read the book and actually finished the book within a week, also not typical for me. ...
Most readers will know the model of brain function called “right and left brain hemispheres.” Other readers will be familiar with the Myers-Briggs personality test (MBTI). Thriving incorporates and goes beyond these ideas to describe a biological basis for how individual differ in their brain use preferences. Again: we each use our brain somewhat uniquely. Thriving suggests how and why we do this and what to do when conflicts between how we like to use our brain and work task performance demands conflict.
She also reviews how introversion and extroversion affect our choices. I always thought introverts were shy and extroverts weren't, but really introversion and extroversion are again of processing. Introverts have an active internal processing method; they are easily overwhelmed with too much external stimulation. Extroverts require external stimulation to jump-start more internal processing.
Ms Benziger presents her ideas with strong scientific support and clear concise prose.
Thriving begins with a paper and pencil test; I found it to be extremely accurate; both on me, and on half a dozen family members I administered it to. Very self-revealing!
She also observes we befriend people whose preferences match our own; however, we often marry people who are strong in our weak areas, as if to complete a whole.
When your job’s needs and your work preferences no longer match
Everyone has a preferred quadrant of their brain to some degree; and this can change over time. One of four quadrants is more strongly preferred by each of us. When our job tasks encourage us to employ the part of our brain we most prefer using, tasks seem easy and enjoyable to us and time flies by.
On the other hand, when required work tasks call for skills outside of my preferred brain quadrant(s), it’s more stressful for us and our brain. A hundred times more effort may be required to do unfamiliar tasks than tasks familiar to us. If you're working a job calling for skill performance outside your brain preference, you become tired more quickly; your brain is literally working 100 times harder.
Benziger believes spending 40 hours a week working in a job out of alignment with your current brain use preferences leads to depression and illness. She includes ways we can strengthen our weak areas and use those skills to keep our energy up even in non-preferred jobs.
Think you are having a midlife crisis? This is a wonderful reframe offering strong therapeutic direction-solutions. You may simply not be working in a job or even a field true to your own natural thinking preference. This isn't the first book to assert midlife crisis is a natural result of not being true to oneself. It is one of very few books providing clear direction and self-help methods to remedy the problem, especially valuable if you need hope.
Thriving encourages readers to learn their own brain use preferences by making four-sided “kite diagrams.” If you ever felt like an odd shaped peg trying to fit myself into a perfectly square hole, this could explain why.

Outstanding! Life-Changing!
By Turner, M.D.
I have thoroughly enjoyed researching Dr. K. Benziger, took her BTSA in spring of 2012 and it furthered my research in Neuroscience and changed my life - how I experience and view: teaching and learning, relationships whether in the office or at home, and life at play.
She writes so well for the "normal" reader; and those of us that have a passion for developmental/learning/educational neuroscience can be energized - I love it!
I am in communication with her global staff so that I may receive licensing and, as well, purchase the Thriving in Mind: The Workbook. Read more about Dr. Benziger's theory at benziger dot org.
Also, in the same context, find more information in books authored by Dr. Arlene R. Taylor (and I'm understanding that the books she writes for children as AMAZING). Dr. Taylor was trained regarding the BTSA Level 1 Licensing by Dr. Benziger.
I love these brilliant, bold, fascinating and fun ladies! Bravo!

Printing not consistent throughout the text. There are three shades of blacks and grays within paragraphs. Makes it difficult to read.
