You too can become a desrt bum!!

I have read this book a few times it is a good read. Some of it is very outdated (written in the 60's and updated a few times up to about 1979). After reading it you get the idea that treasure hunter = desert bum that grabs anything they can find worth a few bucks, like the old coffee grinder and picture frames Karl finds. In treasure hunting and metal detecting circles this book is very much in demand but no longer published. One tip that I would take to heart while undertaking a weekend of desert hunting...is sleep in a sleeping bag and not on the ground or you will wake up with snakes using you to keep warm!!

The Old Master's Masterpiece

This is an extraordinary book! It is an absolutely first-rate guide to hunting for and finding lost and buried treasure. And "buried treasure" encompasses far more than most readers will imagine. Some days I think "Sudden Wealth" is the best single book ever written on finding treasure. Some days I think it is the original THM #6.

If you are interested in finding money and items that can be converted to money - in any city, village, town, hamlet, farm, ranch or campsite in the United States (if not the world) - this is your book!

And - unlike so many of the "treasure" books out there written by people who claim to be professional treasure hunters, Karl was all that - and more. He was not just a professional treasure hunter - he was also a professional treasure finder. Karl was a rock of a man - and he was all pure ore!

The title for the first edition / first printing of this book is "The Treasure Hunter's Manual - 6th Edition." The spine states "von Mueller on Buried Treasure" but that's not the title.

There are 3 editions of this 6th Edition. For the record - to my knowledge copies of the 1st through 5th have never been located.

The first was printed by Karl himself in Grand Prairie, Texas (1961). This is the famous "Special Printing" - a roster of ghost towns and the names and addresses of treasure hunters all across the United States. That list got Karl into a spot of trouble because burglers used it as a guide.

8 States Associates then published the second edition of the 6th with very few changes. Both these editions have tan softcovers (you may never set your eyes on a genuine hardcover edition). Karl's are numbered, as well.

Then RAM came out with several printings. Photos of people using Garrett detectors were added, the very useful book list ("Bibliography of Treasure Hunting") was removed and a list of other RAM books substituted, and positive mentions of Garrett detectors added. Plans and instructions for building KvonM's "Little Monster" metal detector were removed (no surprise there).

If you can afford it, the two original editions are the best. But those are becoming a bit pricey. Start with the RAM editions if you must. Soon enough you'll make money and then be able to afford these - and quite a few other things, as well...

Cooking delights!

What an intriguing story, I didn't figure it out until close to the end.
Bess applies to be Lord Taryn Wentworth's cook, but they aren't strangers to each other. She was hoping to be able to reconnect with him and holy double entendre's batman loved that scene when he was interviewing her. She provides a delightful breakfast the next day, not only for him but for his butler and footman, who incidentally get to share some of those delights. That table was used for more than eating, a cooks job is never done until she has seen to their pleasure. Wentworth comes to the rescue her to restore her heritage, when she was badly treated by her greedy relatives.

Truly enjoyed their happy ending, I'm a sucker for lines like when she says that the hope of seeing him again kept her alive!

I enjoyed reading about Lord Taryn Wentworth & Bess Deveraux, the butler named Gaylord & the footman named James. Lord Wentworth has just taken over this household, and he dismissed the entire staff and is replacing them all starting with the cook. The house manager Mrs. O'Brien has just interviewed the women named Bess Devoraux who has recently been employed with Baron Charles Mowbray for five years and two months, and he has given rave references. Mrs. O'Brien does not seem impressed with Bess's manors because she keeps trying to call The Lord just Wentworth, and that's just not tolerated, but The Lord doesn't seem to mind, in fact he dismisses her and tells her to leave for Dorset right away, she just says's you know I don't want to go, but you must. When she leaves Wentworth asks Bess what she can cook, anything, beef, fish, sweets and I specialize in large parties and balls. Lord Wentworth decides to give her a chance. Read this story because it will make you laugh, cry and cum up a storm. This story will make you very wet, enjoy reading it!

Bess Deveraux has had a difficult life, and been in hiding for several years. Lord Taryn Wentworth, an admitted rogue and debauched newly minted Earl is hiring new staff. When Bess arrives to apply for a position in the household, the sparks and sexual tension is off the chains!

A clever twist on a revenge story, Bess and Wentworth were lovers before she disappeared. Her sexual appetites match his and her responses to his dominant approach and delight in her favors is readily apparent and well presented. De Land mixes the intrigue of the revenge story with delightful and deliciously decadent sexual encounters, a touch of domination and voyeurism as well as several encounters with more than one partner. This is a quick and steamy read that has something for every fan of the genre.

Terrific telling of a horrific murder

It's unfortunate that, so far, the only people that seem to be reading this book are ones who either knew--or are related to--the people involved (myself included). I say this is unfortunate because John Lawrence Reynolds has written a terrific narrative that deserves to be read by anyone with interest in the true crime genre. His relative closeness to the proceedings--his friend is Brett Rae's father and Reynolds was lucky in getting some of the relatives to help him out with the facts--makes for an engrossing insider's view of one of the worst scandals in East Tennessee's history. Mad Notions could be the best first-person true crime book since Ann Rule's The Stranger Beside Me.
Alicia Shayne Good was adopted into a life of affluence when her mother left a volatile relationship with Shayne's father and married local banker Brent Mills from Sevier County, Tennessee. Shayne Mills was popular, intelligent, beautiful (the winner of a Junior Miss competition), and had the best of everything. Soon, however, events (starting with the suspicious death of Mills) conspired to take away Shayne's privilege, beginning her downward spiral. Poor Kelly Lovera, it seems, simply got in her way. A smart small-town boy who was making good, Kelly had just become a lecturer at the local Pellissippi College in Knoxville when Shayne began plotting his death. But she couldn't do it alone, so she began attempting to manipulate her many lovers into assisting her. Unfortunately for Brett Rae, he was in love with Shayne and would do anything she asked.
And so November, 1994, found Kelly Lovera dead in his black Jeep on the side of an embankment. What happened exactly is unknown, due to the conflicting reports of those involved, but Reynolds paints a clear portrait of the before and after, while also showing the effects of how a brutal murder in this small town community was not that odd an occurrence, given the area's history of cover-ups. It's not hard to begin making judgments on behavior after the fact--and to sympathize with those we consider unjustly wronged--but one must remember that this is all after Reynolds has done all the work for us. 20/20 hindsight.
Reynolds uses his award-winning mystery-writing skills (he has won two Arthur Ellis Awards for his books The Man Who Murdered God and Gypsy Sins) to present the events occurring in Mad Notions in a logical progression that ties everything together, presenting it in an easily understandable progression that leads to great reading. He displays remarkable restraint and doesn't go for the obvious sensationalist tack that often tarnishes otherwise good writing in this genre. There is a fascinating story here that doesn't need any assistance and Reynolds lets its own fast-paced, suspenseful nature take the fore. His first-person narration makes the reading that much more immediate, and his use of language makes for vivid description of the parties involved and of the Great Smoky Mountains setting. Even upon finishing the first reading, the reader will believe that he or she has actually met these people, and the irony is not lost on Reynolds that such heinous happenings went on in such beautiful country. Mad Notions is destined to be one of those books that gets unreserved recommendations from stranger to stranger.

Mad Notions: A true tale of Murder & Mahem

I received the book and read it in one day. The book was well researched and acurate but for only a couple of indescrepencies that did not effect the outcome. The author described the victim very well considering he never met him. I should know, the victim is my stepson whom I love and miss dearly. I read the book with tears in my eyes as I relived the hellish account of the murder and trial we went through. I could see each character and events vividly in my mind. Now when our friends ask many questions that arise, we simply tell them to read the book for all the answers. The reality of it is shocking to our family, friends, us and especially the greatest victims of all-our grandchildren. The first murder in Sevierville, Tenn. in 33 years. Hopefully the last - anywhere!!

One of the best true crime stories I have read

I live in Indiana but own a home in Gatlinburg. I have been a regular visitor for more than 40 years to Sevier County. I am an avid true crime reader and so I picked this book up at a bookstore in Sevier County while I was there last year. It was a great read. I finished the book before I left to go back to Indiana, so it was hard to put down. Kudos to the author for writing this book, telling an important story, and giving some insight to the "back-door" history of Sevier County. I learned a lot!

I 100% regret this purchase...

I genuinely have no idea how this book received multiple five-star ratings. There is very little useful information on amino acids here. I first became interested in amino acid therapy after seeing "The Medicated Child" and, as psychology student, being incredibly concerned about the lack of longitudinal studies as to what these megadoses of serious psychiatric medications might be doing developmentally to these quite young children. I tried researching alternative treatment methods and came across some studies on a supplement consisting of high doses of vitamins/amino acids tailored to the specific needs of the individuals with promising results. Since then, I've tried to find some less expensive, highly-praised reference materials to keep at the ready and boost my knowledge. This was not it. If you don't know what amino acids are, or the underlying causes of some psychological conditions and how a holistic approach could help alleviate some symptoms, this will be great at glossing over some broad concepts. It won't go so far as to tell you how to actually effectively use amino acids to help yourself or others, though. There is VERY little specific dosing information here, and also very few quite relevant warnings about how certain amino acids which are mentioned can actually exacerbate some of these conditions. Honestly, this was worthless to me and a waste of money. I got nothing useful from this book. "Amino Acids in Therapy: A Guide to the Therapeutic Application of Protein Constituents" is far more comprehensive and informative. Again, if you lack any basic knowledge on wellness, psychological conditions, holistic medicine, and amino acid therapy, you might in fact take away the idea that amino acid therapy could be useful from this book, but it has no new information for anyone with even a basic foundation in those areas.

Don't waste your money or your time.

Useless, uninformative and a waste of money. If you want to learn about amino acids and how they relate to your symptoms, you won't do that here. He says that you should take them all, and your body will pick the one it needs, so there is no point in understanding anything about the different aminos, or how they might affect you.
The book is one big infomercial for a product this man sells. I wish I had paid more attention to who it was that wrote all those glowing reviews. I wonder what he paid for them.

I found the information to be very clear, concise, and understandable and I did not have to use my medical dictionary once to read it. Philip Brownell, MDiv, PsyD, is a licensed Clinical Psychologist in North Carolina and Oregon and a Registered Psychologist in Bermuda. He is an ordained clergyman and writes a weekly column on integrative issues for The Royal Gazette, Bermuda's largest daily newspaper. He is currently a staff psychologist at Benedict Associates, Ltd., where he offers a broad range of assessment and counseling services to child, adolescent, and adult populations, including individual, couple, family, and group therapy. He is editor of the Handbook for Theory, Research, and Practice in Gestalt Therapy (2008), author of Gestalt Therapy: A Guide to Contemporary Practice (2010), Co-Editor of Continuity and Change: Gestalt Therapy Now (in press), Co-Editor of Gestalt!, the official journal of the Association for the Advancement of Gestalt Therapy (AAGT), a Consulting Editor at the European Journal for Qualitative Research in Psychotherapy, and Co-Chair of the AAGT's Research Task Force. Don't Judge a Book...

Amazon's guide to reviews includes: "What would you have wanted to know before you purchased the product?" I would have wanted to know that, despite the cover and the description, this is more than just a chic book!

At the outset, a bride and groom die in an accident within an hour of their wedding. The remainder of the book is watching their two families deal, cope and try to adjust to the loss of the two young people who were the apples of their families' eyes.

About a quarter through, I thought "Is this all there is? Just mourning for a few hundered pages?" As difficult as that sounds, Ms Waldman really pulls it off. The account is captivating.

The family of the bride are New Yorkers, or as they are known in the tiny Maine village of Red Hook, "from aways". The mother's family ahs been summering so long there that she believes she and her family are an integral part of the fabric of the town. The groom's family are year 'rounders. His mother cleans the homes of the "from aways" (including the bride's) and maintains them during the winter months.

The book follows the summer immediately following the tragedy and the next few thereafter.

Iris, the bride's mother is the focal character, although her husband, father and other daughter also get plenty of focus. On the other side, Jane, the groom's mother and Matt, his brother, are also tracked. Each deals with the loss in his or her different way. Because Red Hook is so small and the families both integral to its character as natives or from aways, the families constantly interact. Their interactions weave through the individuals' stories. The interactions are not only between the individuals, but also between the two very different cultures from which they start. Jim and Becca, the couple were a bridge between the two, but are now gone.

This is a fine account of loss, mourning, coping and trying to heal by several different people who come from distinct cultures.

The writing is extremely good. The characters all have depth and, as one would expect, are seen at both their strongest and weakest. The emotions in this book are raw and always seemingly on the surface, yet the reader is also given hints of undercurrents beneath the outside and the spoken word. Every character copes in a different way with varying degrees of success.

This is highly recommended for its combing the depths of loss and emotion. It is not recommended for a light summer reading on the coast of Maine.

Lobster rolls but no Moxie

Open up the lawn chair and get a cold drink from the cooler. Your summer reading (good for the beach, too!) is waiting for you. Ayelet Waldman's "Red Hook Road" is well written chick lit of the first order, and what's more, it's Maine chick lit. Lobsters and melted butter, blueberry pie, sailing on the bay, fearsome mosquitoes, battered pickups, Hannaford grocery stores---it's almost all there. (Inexplicably, there is no reference to Moxie, the beloved medicine-like soft drink.) The novel is set in Red Hook, Maine, thinly disguised as the actual Downeast town of Blue Hill, with its internationally known summer music festival, Kneisel Hall (Usherman Hall in the book).

Since "Red Hook Road" is meant to be a page-turner, I won't give away a bit of the plot, except to say that it is about two intertwined families and their responses to a tragedy that affects them both. The Copakens are long-time summer visitors from Manhattan or, as Mainers say, "from away." while the Tetherlys are local people. Most of the narration is from the point of view of the indomitable Iris Copaken, a Columbia professor whose specialty is Holocaust Studies, but the omniscient narrator occasionally steps away from Iris to provide insight into other characters. The novel takes place over the course of four summers, with only hints as to what happens in the intervening nine months. You can bet it's cold and bleak up in Red Hook, though, with only the Tetherlys to keep an eye on the closed up summer cottages.

There is a recurring thread of "from away" versus local tension in this novel, although Waldman does not mine this hoary theme with particular success. So dominant is Iris's persona that her opposite number, the house cleaner Jane Tetherly, is reduced to a sullen woman of few words whose only pleasant quality seems to be her ability to make a banana pudding from Nilla wafers that the "from aways" pretend to like. Waldman probably knows that the characterization of Mainers is not her forte; in the opening pages of the book, Iris's daughter Ruthie remarks on how her mother takes infinite pains to chat up the local women but can never shed her outsider status.

"Red Hook Road" ends with a microburst--the weather kind--but the denouement is a kind of prose microburst, too. Everything gets wrapped up VERY rapidly. (Wow, I wish my lawnmower started like the outboard on that unused dinghy in the unused shed!) I'm only giving the novel three stars, as it's not exactly enduring literature. However, as an accompaniment to a sweating glass of iced tea, it's better than a plateful of cookies.

LIKED IT - DID NOT LOVE IT

This book was good - but it is receiving a LOT of buzz that I simply don't think it is worthy of, I think it has been a little over-rated.

I certainly had no trouble finishing it, and the characters and the atmosphere (Maine) easy to get into - but I felt as it went on it rambled and at the end it never tied up any of the loose ends.

I have read much better books this summer - for example, Father of the Rain by Lilly King, which I would give five stars.
